Florida Atlantic University (Elementary Education)
My name is Ciara and I am a current Elementary Education major at Florida Atlantic University. I have an Associate’s degree from a state college and I love to teach. I have worked with elementary age children as an extended day counselor. I worked with k-5 and children with mental and behavioral disabilities. During the after-school hours I helped with homework, engaged in fun activities with the children, and provided them with stimulating engagements. Working with children with disabilities was an eye opener and gave me the opportunity to learn so many new things. Being able to make a difference in their lives even if it was in after-school was a very satisfying thing.
I have had several different jobs, from working with animals to working at a water park. At the water park I was able to book birthday parties and swimming lessons for children, but I really enjoy the educational setting. In high school I was in the International Baccalaureate program and then I transferred to an advanced learning center to dual enroll. I took college credits alongside my high school credits and I graduated with both my Associate’s degree and my high school diploma. I also graduated with honors. I’m currently taking a full course load of education courses pertaining to diversity, teaching, measurement, and evaluation. As far as tutoring I believe in a very hands on approach. Students are also very different from each other. They learn in many different ways. Some students learn by being hands on, others learn by listening. Each child’s needs must be considered and used within the learning process. As a tutor and eventually as a teacher I aspire to make learning a more enjoyable process for everyone.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
