About Kimberly

I'm an artist as well as art teacher out of south Florida, with a BFA in Painting. While my primary job is as an artist creating my body of work, I also teach at many schools and summer programs in the Boca Raton, north Ft. Lauderdale region, including an art museum, and I enjoy teaching students of all ages! I teach drawing and painting techniques, paint and medium handling (oil, acrylic and watercolor), dry media handling (charcoal, graphite, pastel, colored pencil), from-scratch canvas building, watercolor paper stretching, and art theory (composition, color usage, etc). I am also proficient in mixed media techniques, including etching and monotype, and the use of large scale paper or canvas. My current body of work explores the use of art in addressing ecological concerns. I am a member of the Viridis Art Collective, Artists For Climate Action, and the Miami Pine Rocklands Coalition.

I also teach art for the younger kids under the age of 12, and work at the Imagination Station Preschool and art camps at the Coral Springs Museum of Art. I focus strongly on cultivating creative thinking, problem solving techniques and links to art history, while having fun and learning to realize creative or technical potential.

Whether you are a teen/adult looking to draw, paint, realize a body of work or work on a portfolio, or a parent looking for a teacher for your child I would be happy to be your art tutor. I can currently only manage students that are within 5 miles of FAU in Boca Raton. Please message me with any questions :)

Best,
Kim

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I did two years of drawing and rendering, including drawing from a model and still life while pursuing my BFA in painting. I currently tutor students in drawing in the Broward area and teach Techniques of Drawing at the Coral Springs Museum of Art. Drawing plays a major role in my current artwork, with animals and plants being recent subjects. Each student learns differently, and so I take may approaches in opening the door to drawing for them. I use many warm-up exercises to help train their eyes and hands, including gestures, blind contour, and working with grids. I require my students to keep a sketchbook and to draw from life at least once a week, as I believe that the best way to learn to draw is to practice.

Painting

I graduated with a BFA in Painting from Florida Atlantic University in 2014, and have been working in oils, watercolor, gauche and acrylic. I attend painting lectures offered by manufacturers whenever I can. My approach to teaching painting is focused on color theory and handling of specific mediums and brands. Each medium and brand handles and reacts differently, and so painting lessons must be tailored to it specifically. Pigment color theory and painting techniques appear in almost all of my work in oils, watercolor, monotype and mixed media.
