About Aliza

Hey there,

I'm here to help you achieve your goals whether they be
* cramming for your test
* breaking down complex concepts
* impressing your science teacher
AND/OR
* actually understanding & ENJOYing science!

A little about me:
After graduate school, I decided to go back and take some basic science courses at NYU (bio, chem, orgo, physics). At the same time, I worked in a developmental neuroscience lab working with rats and 1 day old human babies. I studied how stress effects brain development. I recently returned from a Computational Neuroscience Fellowship program in Israel. While there, I got to isolate and and replicate my own DNA. That was pretty cool. I'm also a PADI certified open-water SCUBA diver--did that in the Mediterranean. Undergrad GPA: 3.9, Graduate GPA: 3.85. I've tutored college students in statistics and elementary students in reading. I have study materials from my undergraduate courses and MCAT prep. I'm happy to work with students of any age. I'm friendly, patient and am dedicated to helping you succeed.
So let's get started!

More info about my background:
Aside from the bio, chem, organic chemistry, and physics courses mentioned above, I've taken various grad level statistics courses, algebra and calculus, anatomy and physiology with cadaver labs, neuroanatomy, cellular basis of neuronal processes and dysfunction, courses in sensation and perception, psychological development, assessment, behavioral therapy, PTSD. My last GRE scores were 710 for verbal and 720 for math.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I've taken 2 semesters of Biology with labs at NYU undergrad, 2 semesters of anatomy and physiology (undergrad) with cadaver labs, and lots of graduate level courses on sensation, perception, neuroanatomy and physiology, and the cellular basis of neuronal processes and dysfunction at NYU and Hebrew University. While at HU, I worked in a neurogenetics lab investigating genetic links to PTSD in Palestinian children. Bio is my favorite!

Chemistry

I've taken 2 semesters each of gen chem and organic chemistry with labs at NYU. I scored well on my MCATs in chemistry. I worked in a lab for 2 years using various reagents and radioactive glucose. I can break chem down so it's no so intimidating.

GRE

I recently studied on my own and scored 167 on verbal and 156 on quantitative (although I had done a lot better on practice tests- nerves, I suppose). Translating those scores to the old scale, my scores would be 710 verbal and 720 for the math.

Physics

I've taken several semesters of physics with labs at NYU and scored well on the physics section of the MCATs.

Psychology

I have a MA in psychology from NYU. I worked for two years researching the effects of trauma on brain development in a rodent model, as well as human infant attachment beginning from day 1 after birth. I have several published articles. I also received a fellowship in computational neuroscience from Hebrew University in Israel, where I studied genetic links to PTSD in Palestinian children. I also completed an internship in clinical neuropsychology there.

Reading

I recently took the GRE and scored in the 97th percentile on the verbal section. I have a master's degree in psychology, which required reading and writing scientific papers. I am currently tutoring a first grader in reading and seeing great improvements.

Statistics

I am a TA in undergrad statistics at FAU.
