About Julie

"Make success unavoidable!" These three words convey not only the foundation of my own educational philosophy, but also what should be the most essential responsibility of any educator in any setting. Yet, as simple as it appears to be, the concept of success, and the application of it to each individual student, is the most daunting but rewarding challenge any educator faces. For in order for each student to achieve at the highest level, each must be recognized as a unique individual with his or her own distinct set of skills, talents and weaknesses. The best educators discount the "one-size-fits-all" approach and tailor their lessons to meet each of their learner's needs, acknowledging that each student acquires knowledge and skills in his or her own way and at his or her own pace.

My name is Julie; I am a twice-nominated teacher-of-the-year candidate and former educator with a combined fifteen years of classroom experience at both the secondary and the undergraduate level. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science Education and Political Science, and I am halfway through my Master's in European History. I also have completed all coursework for my gifted education endorsement, and have served as a gifted adviser/coordinator in the public school system. While I spent the majority of my career teaching middle and high school social science classes, I also founded and coached a nationally-recognized, award-winning forensics and debate program. Most recently, I had the opportunity to work at the undergraduate level, teaching World History as a graduate assistant at Florida Atlantic University. Primarily responsible for guiding students through the research and writing process required to complete the course, I was exposed to the multitude of students who lacked the necessary critical reading, research, and writing skills needed to achieve both short and long-term success at the college level. This experience provided me with the impetus to begin a new phase of my career - a phase in which I could work one-on-one with my students to provide them with the tools and strategies necessary to achieve the highest level of success in any classroom at any level.

Combining my own professional knowledge, training, and experience, I will develop a personalized program to improve and enhance your student's abilities to read and think critically, study productively, research effectively, and write for a specific purpose, with clarity, conciseness, and depth; we will also address study skills, and which of these skills best fits your student's individual needs. We'll begin by determining your student's most effective learning styles and interests, then tailor all lessons to best fit those styles and interests. These lessons will create a foundation of tools that the student can apply in any language-based class, whether it be English, science, or social science, at either the secondary or undergraduate level. Lessons are very student-centered, and both the student and the parent will have a role in the creation and application of the program as a whole

While I can concentrate specifically on providing an individualized college-prep approach, I can also provide specific subject-area assistance in any social science or English class, math (up to and including Algebra II), and Spanish (I-III), having tutored these subjects at different times over the course of my career; I can also provide college entrance exam preparation. And as a former forensics and debate coach whose students have won a variety of events at national-level tournaments, I can also help students prepare for local, regional or national tournaments in all areas of competition.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to speaking with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

In addition to my classroom experience, I also served on committees that assisted in the development of Florida state standards for both American and World History curricula at the middle and high school level, as well as those that helped to develop district-wide final exams in various disciplines of the Social Studies department.

College Counseling

I am a twice-nominated teacher-of-the-year candidate and former educator with a combined fifteen years of classroom experience at both the secondary and the undergraduate level. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science Education and Political Science, and I am halfway through my Master's in European History. I also have completed all coursework for my gifted education endorsement, and have served as a gifted adviser/coordinator in the public school system.

While I spent the majority of my career teaching middle and high school social science classes, I also had the opportunity to work at the undergraduate level, teaching World History as a graduate assistant at Florida Atlantic University. In this position, my primary responsibilities included guiding students through the research and writing processes. As such, I have a strong understanding of the writing skills that are needed at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.I also provided private tutoring to a variety of students in a multitude of areas, including college counseling. I often assisted my students with the entire application process, with a specific focus on writing college essays. Under my direction, 100 percent of my students earned acceptance to the colleges of their choice, including Harvard, Yale, Emory, and a host of other nationally-ranked colleges and universities. In addition to this, I also provided guidance to my students attempting to earn private scholarships; under my direction, a great majority of my students earned scholarships from corporations such as Coca-Cola, Target, JAFCO and Siemens.

Elementary (K-6th)

I spent the majority of my career teaching social studies and language arts at the sixth grade level. I also spent time teaching fifth and sixth grade at a charter school for gifted and talented learners. In this position, I was responsible for creating and maintaining curricula in the areas of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. It was also my responsibility to develop and institute individual education plans to meet the needs of each of my students.

In addition to my classroom teaching experience, I also have provided independent tutoring to numerous elementary school students. In this setting, I provided reinforcement and enrichment activities to students, focusing on the areas of mathematics, science, and language arts.

English

Over the course of my career, I have had opportunities to teach a variety of English curricula, ranging from sixth and seventh grade language arts classes to high school speech and debate programs. I also tutored numerous individual students in one-on-one settings, often focusing upon the reinforcement of critical reading comprehension and writing skills each student needed to succeed in the classroom setting. As a result, I am wholly familiar with the many different components that are a part of the language arts curriculum as a whole.

To improve reading comprehension, I emphasize activities that utilize my students' prior knowledge, and then relate it to the upcoming material. I then instill strategies to assist them in processing the information. Upon applying these tools, students can then achieve a deeper understanding of concepts such as main idea, supporting detail, tone, context, point-of-view, structure, and the author's purpose in communicating the information. I consistently attempt to engender a love reading, regardless of the material at hand.

To improve my students' writing skills, I create activities that improve their ability to understand and employ accurate grammar, mechanics and usage skills. I construct projects that help students distinguish between and apply the different types of writing. I also constantly reinforce the need for writing that is not only clear, concise, and organized, but also demonstrates a depth of thought and support.

Public Speaking

I am a twice-nominated teacher-of-the-year candidate and former educator with a combined fifteen years of classroom experience at both the secondary and the undergraduate level. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science Education and Political Science, and I am halfway through my Master's in European History. I also have completed all coursework for my gifted education endorsement, and have served as a gifted adviser/coordinator in the public school system.

While I spent the majority of my career teaching middle and high school social science classes, I also had the opportunity to establish and maintain a nationally-recognized forensics and debate program. This was a two-part program that included both academic and competitive components; in my role as founder, I created the curriculum to be taught in the classroom setting and functioned as head coach of the competitive program. Within both components, emphasis was placed upon building a foundation of basic presentation skills that could be tailored to fit any setting, with emphasis on effective use of voice, posture, gestures, eye contact and movement. Upon mastery of these skills, students were given a chance to apply them in a competitive environment. Under my direction, many of my students placed highly at numerous regional and national events, including a University of Florida Blue Key champion and a CFL and NFL national semi-finalist; these same students were able to use the skills they developed under my guidance with great success at higher levels of academia, as well as in the professional world.

SAT Reading

As an educator at the secondary level, the lessons I developed always stressed the continued development of the critical reading skills needed to succeed in the classroom. As an educator at the undergraduate level, I had the opportunity not only to observe the importance of those skills to success at the university level, but also to assist students individually in the development of these critical reading skills at the graduate level. As a private tutor, I have combined my experiences to create programs of studies that are tailored to the individual needs of my students. Skills such as identifying main ideas and supporting details, determining an author's purpose, explaining the structure and organization of a text, defining vocabulary through context clues, and making inferences from information provided are all incorporated into an overall program not only intended to improve test scores, but also bring about success at the university level!

SAT Writing

Throughout my years as an educator, regardless of the setting, I constantly taught and reinforced the critical reading and writing skills that my students would need to succeed in any academic environment. As a secondary social science instructor and a high school forensics and debate coordinator, I developed activities and projects that emphasized the need to create clear, concise, and detailed written material. As a teaching assistant in Florida Atlantic University's history department, I was responsible not only for guiding my students through the writing process, but also formally assessing their final written products. As such, I am well-versed in the expectations of college professors at the undergraduate level and can convey them clearly to my students!

Social Studies

Both my education and my experience qualify me as a tutor in the area of Social Studies. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science Education (as well as one in Political Science), and have completed half off my coursework towards a Masters in European History; in addition, I have completed all coursework for my endorsement in gifted education.
I bring 15 years of both classroom and tutoring experience. I spent the majority of my career teaching a variety of social studies classes at the secondary level, including American, European, and World History, World Geography, and Civics. I also served as the social studies department chair, as well as the advisor for the gifted program, while employed with Broward County Public Schools. In my most recent teaching experience, I had the opportunity to work as a graduate assistant in the History department at Florida Atlantic University. As an assistant, my responsibilities included not only teaching World History, but also providing one-on-one guidance in the areas of the writing process and test preparation that met each of my students needs. Throughout most of this time, I also was able to tutor numerous students in a multitude of areas.
With both my training and experience as a guide, I have learned that the best approach to helping an individual student achieve success is to begin by determining how a student learns, as well as his or her areas of strengths and weaknesses. Once these aspects have been determined,a program of study can be developed that will enhance the student's ability to process information and achieve mastery of the material presented.

Study Skills

I am a twice-nominated teacher-of-the-year candidate and former educator with a combined fifteen years of classroom experience at both the secondary and the undergraduate level. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science Education and Political Science, and I am halfway through my Master's in European History. I also have completed all coursework for my gifted education endorsement, and have served as a gifted adviser/coordinator in the public school system.

I spent the majority of my career teaching middle and high school social science classes, while also providing private tutoring to a select number of students. In each of these settings, I had the opportunity to either formally or informally teach study skills curriculums, with specific focuses on time management, organization, critical reading and writing skills, and test preparation. Most recently, I had the opportunity to work at the undergraduate level, teaching World History as a graduate assistant at Florida Atlantic University, where my primary responsibilities included guiding students through the research and writing process, as well as test preparation.

Combining my own professional knowledge, training, and experience, I will develop a personalized program to improve and enhance student's abilities to read and think critically, study productively, research effectively, and write for a specific purpose, with clarity, conciseness, and depth; we will also address study skills, teaching methods that will assist the student's ability to manage his or her time, organize his or her materials, and study productively.

We'll begin by determining your student's most effective learning styles and interests, then tailor all lessons to best fit those styles and interests. These lessons will create a foundation of tools that the student can apply in any class. Lessons are very student-centered, and both the student and the parent will have a role in the creation and application of the program as a whole.

World History

I believe that the combination of my educational background and professional experience qualify me as a top candidate to assist your student master material in any type or level of world history course. Not only do I hold BA's in both political science, a subject in which the study and knowledge of political history is essential, and social studies education, I have also completed half of my coursework towards a master's in history. While my education has provided me with a wide range of historical knowledge upon which to draw, my professional experience has taught me how to deliver this knowledge in a manner that allows each of my students to master the material efficiently and successfully. Not only have I taught world history classes at both the middle school and high school level, but I also have assisted in the development of the State of Florida's world history curriculum for the 6th and 10th grade levels. In addition to teaching in secondary classrooms, I also have taught world history at the undergraduate level as a teaching assistant in the History department of Florida Atlantic University. Throughout my career, regardless of setting, it has been my responsibility to assist each of my students develop the critical reading, writing, and researching skills one needs to apply to the study of history; in doing so, I provide each student with the skills and knowledge he or she will need to guarantee success in both present and future academic endeavors.
