About Elaine

Elaine has degrees in English (B.S., Radford College and course work toward M.A., Wake Forest University) as well as law (J.D., George Washington University). Her career includes working as an editorial assistant, a paralegal, an attorney, an English professor, a freelance writer, and a tutor in many subjects (English, Government, Business, Legal Research and Writing, Education, test preparation). She has prepared students for the writing and reading comprehension portion of standardized tests ranging from SSAT and FCAT, to PSAT, SAT, ACT, Florida Teacher Certification, and GRE, and has helped students prepare personal essays for admission to college, grad school, law school, and Fulbright scholarships. Her writing and editing accomplishments include editing various law journals as well as manuscripts ranging from autobiographies to travels in Egypt; writing a book on legal citation form; and creating poems, plays and short stories. In the classroom she incorporates PowerPoint and YouTube presentations, interactive quizzes, educational games, and role playing.

Currently she teaches English in the Dialogues of Learning at a university, a multi-disciplinary approach to learning, and teaches legal research and writing online for paralegals at another university. She has developed courses in Developmental English at Digital Media Arts College, where she has coached gifted artists who are struggling with their writing to pass the placement test and succeed in College Composition. She has also incorporated comic book stories into her courses on writing and citizenship. During summers, she teaches international students studying English abroad in the United States. She enjoys working with students of all ages and abilities.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

My background in law includes knowledge of corporations, business regulations, etc. Currently, I am getting my MBA with a specialization in marketing. I am also a finalist in the Isaacson Innovation Challenge at Lynn University, where students and staff are invited to submit their ideas for a business or product and compete for prize money to develop their idea.

College Counseling

I have had training and experience in reviewing college application essays, as I tutored for a number of years for Score at the Top in Boca Raton, Florida. I try to make each application stand out, not necessarily to show the applicant as a top star, but as having special qualities that make them a valuable addition to any organization. In addition, I find out why the student is interested in applying to that particular school, and then show why the student would be a good fit for the school.

Criminal Justice

I am well qualified to tutor in this subject, as I have a law degree from George Washington University. In addition, I have taught courses for paralegals and tutored many undergraduate students in criminal justice. My ex-husband began his practice by taking court appointed criminal cases, and I accompanied him to jail and to court when available. These experiences educated me more on the criminal justice system than law school.

English

My undergraduate degree is in English and I have completed course work toward my M.A. in English from Wake Forest University. I have taught English for more than ten years at Lyn University and other institutions.

Marketing

I have tutored many business students in marketing. In addition, I am currently pursuing an MBA at Lynn University with a specialization in marketing. Recently, I entered Lynn's Innovation Challenge, which is a university version of Shark Tanks, and was selected as one of 5 finalists. As a self-employed attorney and currently a tutor, I have had to use my marketing skills to build and maintain a successful practice. It would be my pleasure to tutor marketing students.

Social Studies

I have a law degree from George Washington University, which gives me a broad overview of our government's structure and operation and understanding of the U.S. Constitution. I have also taught the Dialogues of Learning at Lynn University, a multidisciplinary approach to classical readings in literature and the social sciences. I also teach a class in Citizenship for freshman, using the theme Comic Book Superheroes as Models of Good Citizens.

Study Skills

I have received some training in study skills at a tutoring center where I worked previously, and applied these skills with some high school students, including one who wished to pass a qualifying exam to exempt a freshman year class in health. These strategies include reading with highlighting and annotating; reviewing highlights and notes; and writing an informal outline using phrases and sentences to restate the material.
