About Kristen

Hi and thank you for taking the time to check out my profile. If I can help you with what you're looking for, please get in touch!

What distinguishes me from many other tutors?

I am in medical school, and as a result I have a strong personal interest in what makes new learning stick. Because of the tremendous volume of information that medical students are expected to retain, I've had to learn to use techniques, tips and tricks that help convert new information into long term memory so that I can learn more new information as it comes at me! It hasn't been easy, but through the help of books like "Change Anything" which is about new habit formation and "Making it Stick" which is about spaced repetition, I've developed my own set of techniques and have applied these scientifically proven techniques to tutoring students. Many students who are struggling in school feel discouraged and learn to dislike school and learning, but often they just need someone to show them the right way to study. Learning to love to learn is pivotal in mastering any new set of skills in life, both inside and outside the classroom, and is a skill worth investing in early.

Do you need help with college application? With essays?

I am in my final months as a medical student and will be graduating as an MD in May. I have been through the rigors of higher level education. I know the ins and outs of test taking, applications, and interviews, and I am especially good at writing essays that get interviews. If you are looking for someone to help with a college application essay, or an essay of any kind, I am definitely the right fit. I have been told by interviewers that my applications are among the most interesting and appealing because of my writing skills, and when a school is wading through thousands of applications that all start to look the same, interesting is what makes you stand out.

Do you need help with test prep (ACT, SAT, PSAT, etc)?

I am very well versed in helping students prepare for standardized testing. I've been through many years of rigorous testing and I have hundreds of hours of experience in helping students prepare for standardized tests. Although they are daunting, the great thing about these tests is that they are very predictable. If you are willing to put in the time, I can help you to identify your weaknesses, I can give you resources that will drill you on those specific areas so that you don't waste time reviewing what you already know, and your score will definitely improve. Let me know if I can help you.

Do you need help with your math classes?

I have thousands of hours of experience in tutoring math of all levels and it is one of the subjects I most enjoy tutoring. As a student years ago, I found math so intimidating that I didn't like it very much myself. My years of tutoring have given me a comfort level with math and I really enjoy transferring that confidence to students as they learn to master skills they thought were unobtainable.

About me

I am a Florida native, a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, a former Peace Corps volunteer (I spent two years in Africa) and a current medical student applying for general surgery residencies. I have just a few months until graduation, and would love to be of help to students in need in the meantime. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

The ACT English test assesses your grammar knowledge. Like any test, it can seem very overwhelming! However, the ACT English test is actually very predictable. There are certain grammatical rules that are tested over and over again, on every single test. Once you learn these few rules, you will be able to easily recognize the answer the test maker is looking for. The ACT is just as much about knowing what the test wants as it is about being smart. It is possible to improve this score given a little bit of time and practice.

ACT Math

The ACT math is very similar to the SAT math, with the exception of the inclusion of trigonometry on the ACT. It's easier than the SAT but faster paced - you have about a minute per question.

ACT Reading

The most important thing to keep in mind when doing the ACT reading section is that the right answer will always be supported by evidence that you can point to in the passage. If you can't find the line or lines that support that your answer choice is the right one, then it likely isn't the right answer! Other important things to keep in mind when taking the reading section of the test include the importance of pacing, as well as the importance of reading the question carefully. You want to ensure that you are answering the question being asked! It is very easy to choose an answer because it sounds grammatically correct, or because it seems true based on knowledge you're bringing into the test rather than what you've read in the passage.

ACT Science

The ACT Science section seems really intimidating, but the reality is that you don't have to have any previous knowledge of biology, chemistry, or any other science in order to do well on the ACT Science section. It's all about reading graphs - if you can see through all the big scientific words and just focus on the graphs, you'll do just fine.

Algebra 1

About 90% of what I tutor is Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry. Many students seek help with these math subjects. I tutor home-schooled students, FLVS students, and students that go to local high schools and middle schools including Wellington High School, Palm Beach Central High School, Dreyfoos, Suncoast, and J.I Leonard.

Algebra 2

I tutor more math than anything else. Many students seek help with Algebra and Geometry, and I find that most students are bright and capable but find themselves in classes so large that they can't ask questions, or with teachers who don't communicate in the way the students wish for. I tutor home schooled students, FLVS students, and students that go to local high schools and middle schools including Wellington High School, Palm Beach Central High School, Dreyfoos, Suncoast, and J.I Leonard.

Anatomy

As a medical student in my final year, I have seen anatomy up close and personal. I was very lucky on my surgery rotations to have had great doctors who let me scrub into surgeries and get very hands-on experience of the inside of the human body. It is beautiful and fascinating, and anatomy is much easier to learn when you understand why the body is structured the way it is.

English

English can be a tough subject for some students. Words like subject pronoun, object pronoun, adjective, predicate, helping verb, adverb, preposition, and many many more, tend to intimidate students. Isn't a sentence just a sentence? However, there are some easy tricks that can make a big difference in a student's experience of English class. Often a little clarification and practice is all that's needed.

Geometry

About 90% of what I tutor is math. Many students seek help with these math subjects. I tutor home schooled students, FLVS students, and students that go to local high schools and middle schools including Wellington High School, Palm Beach Central High School, Dreyfoos, Suncoast, and J.I Leonard.

Literature

Literature can be a tough subject. Sometimes students struggle to get through a book like The Stranger or The Grapes of Wrath without falling asleep - let alone analyzing and writing about it! However, many students really improve their experience of literature when they have one-on-one help - someone to guide them through the key themes, symbols, and motifs and to relate those universal themes to themselves.

Pharmacology

As a medical student in my last year of medical school at FAU, I've been studying pharmacology for nearly four years in the context of learning how to manage disease in patients. The best way to learn anything is to see its real world applications, and I've had plenty of hospital experience in the hospital which has allowed me to see pharmacology in action.

Precalculus

Many students are intimidated by this class, but it's really not as bad as it seems! I have years of experience tutoring all levels of math up through trig. Contact me if I can help you get through Precalculus.

PSAT

The PSAT is a very important test. Not only does it give a person some indication of how he will do on the all-important SAT, but it also determines his eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship. The good news is that there are plenty of resources to help you prep for the test, so the sooner you get started - the better!

SAT Math

I have several years of experience tutoring SAT Prep. For some great books to help you along, try the following:

The College Board's SAT Study Guide (there are two versions and both are good - one has 7 practice tests and the other has 10).

Up Your Score - This is a hilarious book that is particularly helpful with writing and vocabulary.

Math 800 - For students aiming for really high scores, Math 800 is the ticket. It's got problems that are harder than any you'll see on the real test. By practicing these, you're sure to see your math score improve.

Call me if I can help!

SAT Reading

The SAT Reading Section should be approached by reading the questions first, then reading the passages. There are very effective tips - for example, find the thesis statement and topic sentences of each paragraph. This will ensure that you understand the main idea and author's tone - which are questions that are always asked. The toughest part of the reading sections is the timing - but there are certainly ways of increasing your pace, and improving your score.

SAT Writing

The SAT Writing section offers one of the best opportunities for improving one's SAT score. There are fantastic resources - one of my favorites is UP Your Score, a funny but extremely effective guide to the SAT written by Ivy League students. Within the book are 13 essential rules for recognizing and correcting SAT Writing errors. If writing is your weakness, take heart - and go out and buy Up Your Score.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is one of the most feared math classes. Many students feel like they are learning a whole new language when they approach sines, cosines, tangents, secants, cosecants, and cotangents. Don't worry, though - with a little bit of help I've seen many students who feel lost become quite confident working with trig! From graphing trig functions to proving identities, a little bit of help goes a long way in this subject.

Writing

Writing a good essay is a skill that many students never fully grasp, but it all really comes down to organization. Once students can learn to find and state a powerful thesis, and to find key support for that thesis, the rest is pretty easy. The hardest part is really organization. Good essays are a pivotal part of a student's application to college. Often, the essay is the only part of the application that will allow admissions to distinguish between equally competent students. Writing a memorable essay is a vital skill for this reason alone. However, writing skills are also tested on the SAT, MCAT, and other standardized tests, in addition to being important for English and literature classes.
