Current adjunct mathematics instructor at a local college for four years and former high school math teacher for twelve years. I am certified in Mathematics Grades 6-12. I also hold a master's degree in Educational Technology. My approach to tutoring is practical and hands-on. I like my students to develop an understanding of the concepts rather than dependence upon a rigid set of rules. In addition to assistance with mathematics, I help my students to facilitate independent learning and organizational skills that will assist them in all of their academic pursuits.
My areas of expertise are Algebra and Geometry. My students develop skills in understanding their textbook and utilizing available technology to supplement their learning. Visualizing mathematics and understanding concepts is sometimes difficult to accomplish in a large classroom setting, but one-on-one students can fill in the gaps and achieve a sense of accomplishment and success that will allow them to gain confidence in their ability to contribute in the classroom. Mathematics is a building process. Many students struggle in Algebra and Geometry because they are missing some foundational skills. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
