About Larry

After starting out as an engineer, I now have 14 years of experience as a math, physics and electronics teacher and 5 years experience as a math and science tutor. Here are five reasons that You might like to have me tutor you or your children.
(1) First of all, I know the material very well and this helps me to simplify it for the student and make it easier to learn. I am also very aware of how to apply math and physics to everyday life.

(2) I make the tutoring process interesting and pleasant and I am very patient and encouraging and get along well with most students.

(3 I emphasize teaching students how to work problems as a way to learn the course material more efficiently. This approach is more interesting and easier for the student and also helps them to remember what they have learned.

(4) As a result of my engineering and problem solving experience and by observing how students learn, I have found out how important it is to help students get motivated and organized and become more efficient learners. I talk with students about their goals and attitudes and help them to believe in themselves and decide on high standards for themselves.

(5) Finally have also studied how the the brain works when learning and solving problems. I have developed a problem solving approach based on not overloading your short term memory. I use this material in my tutoring, and it is very helpful since this information is not taught in schools. This approach is very effective and so I am currently writing a book: "Simple Keys to Success in School and Life" to be able to help more students learn

Therefore as well as being excellent at teaching math and physics, I help students to deal with general issues such as personal goals and attitudes and especially I help them develop better study skills and strategies. As a result I can help students learn a particular subject in less time than you would think. in addition this approach helps students become more effective and well organized in their life in general. Check out my recommendations on the website and see what my students think.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have done both SAT and FCAT tutoring -- which are similar to the ACT test. For all of these tests, we need to work through a workbook that has sample problems. I recommend the Kaplan test prep book for the SAT test and the Cliff Notes Test Prep Book for the ACT test. These can be purchased at a bookstore or at Amazon. In order to do well on the test, it is important to master the material in the sample tests. This may take a longer or shorter time -- depending on the student's background and ability. If the student needs a lot of preparation, you may want to tutor more than once a week.

Algebra 1

I have taught various levels of math at a middle high school and at 4 different colleges for more than twelve years and I have tutored math for five years. I have experience teaching and tutoring everything from pre-algebra to calculus and differential equations. I am familiar with what courses an Algebra 1 student typically has already taken and what he needs to learn in order to be ready for his next course.

I emphasize teaching students how to work problems. This approach is easier for them to grasp than a more traditional lecture style approach. It is also more interesting for the students.

I am good at working with students who are failing and with students who want to get straight A's. I get along well with most students and can make learning interesting. I am very patient and encouraging.

I have found in my teaching that most students have not been taught good study habits or test taking skills. Therefore I give my students very specific and useful advice on how to study, and take tests. I also help them develop good problem solving skills. This advice helps my students to learn more easily and do better in their courses.

Algebra 2

I have taught various levels of math at 4 different colleges for eight years and I have tutored math for two years. I have experience teaching everything from pre-algebra to calculus and differential equations. I am familiar with what courses a student typically has already taken and what he needs to know for his next course. I try to use common sense examples that are easy to understand. I can help the student who is failing and the student who wants to get straight A's. I get along well with most students and can make learning interesting. I am very patient and encouraging.

Calculus

Calculus is somewhat different from algebra, but when presented properly it is not that hard to learn. I have a PhD in Physics and so I have a lot of experience using calculus to solve physics problems. I have a good background for teaching both calculus theory and applied calculus.

I emphasize teaching students how to work problems. This approach is easier for them to grasp than a more traditional lecture style approach. It is also more interesting for the students.

Therefore I give my students very specific and useful advice on how to study, and take tests. I also help them develop good problem solving skills. This advice helps my students to learn more easily and do better in their courses.

Differential Equations

I have a PhD in physics which involves solving many different kinds of differential equations. I have also taught an undergraduate course in differential equations and taken several applied math courses that deal with differential equations. I also work with students to teach them better study habits and test taking techniques.

GED

I have helped many students study for standardized tests and the GED test in particular. I have had good success in helping students learn the material and pass the tests. I help students to learn good study and test taking techniques which is very important. And I help students develop problem solving techniques that are important for math and physics problems.

Geometry

I have taught various levels of math at 4 different colleges for eight years and I have tutored math for two years. I have experience teaching everything from pre-algebra to calculus and differential equations. I am familiar with what courses a student typically has already taken and what he needs to know for his next course. I try to use common sense examples that are easy to understand. I can help the student who is failing and the student who wants to get straight A's. I get along well with most students and can make learning interesting. I am very patient and encouraging. I have both taught and tutored high school geometry and as a student I have used many (simple and more advanced) geometry concepts for physics applications.

Physics

I have a PhD in Physics and I have taught and tutored college math and physics at three different colleges for 8 years. I am sure that I can help you/your child to do well in your/their physics class.

Prealgebra

I have taught various levels of math at a middle high school and at 4 different colleges for eight years and I have tutored math for two years. I have experience teaching everything from pre-algebra to calculus and differential equations. I taught both middle high school and college level prealgebra courses. I am familiar with what courses a student typically has already taken and what he needs to know for his next course. I try to use common sense examples that are easy to understand. I can help the student who is failing and the student who wants to get straight A's. I get along well with most students and can make learning interesting. I am very patient and encouraging.

Precalculus

I have taught various levels of math at 4 different colleges for eight years and I have tutored math for two years. I have experience teaching everything from prealgebra to calculus and differential equations. I have taught and tutored prealgebra and algebra courses to grade school, high school and college students. I am familiar with what courses a student typically has already taken and what he needs to know for his next course. I try to use common sense examples that are easy to understand. I can help the student who is failing and the student who wants to get straight A's. I get along well with most students and can make learning interesting. I am very patient and encouraging. I have found that I can explain prealgebra concepts in a simple way that enables most students to understand and remember the material.

I have done both SAT and FCAT tutoring. For all of these tests, we need to work through a workbook that has sample problems. A SAT workbook can be purchased at a bookstore. Trigonometry

I am familiar with what courses a student typically has already taken and what he needs to know for his next course. Trigonometry has many common sense examples that can be used to make it easier to understand. I can help the student who is failing and the student who wants to get straight A's. I get along well with most students and can make learning interesting. I am very patient and encouraging. I also help students learn better study habits and test taking techniques.

know how to teach the material in a way that the person understands it — I was very happy with the help that I received and I understood the material. I have never gotten higher than the minimum passing grade in math but I received an A this semester all due to the excellent tutoring I got from Dr. L. I would highly recommend anyone that needs math help Dr. L is the person to go to. ...
