Hi, I'm Josh! I've been teaching for over 15 years, and love connecting with students. When a teacher can really understand where a student is coming from and understand what resources and techniques to leverage to best make him or her succeed, everybody benefits. A love of learning - not just subject matter, but learning about teaching and student - has made me an effective educator. My students have consistently scored highly on measures of physics understanding, from conceptual (Force Concept Inventory) to problem-solving (AP Physics C exam score average > 4.5). I have twice been a finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching.

It is vital to build student comfort with underlying concepts (rather than relying on equations and memorization), but also with the idea that they will not necessarily know the answer before a problem starts, what to do next, or even where to start. Willingness to jump into a new situation, confident that they can figure things out after missteps, is the single most important thing that students learn from me. Solid habits of effective problem solving is another. Once students understand fundamental concepts, they can apply them to many diverse situations; that skill will continue to be valuable long after a single assessment or course is complete.

I earned a BS in Applied Mathematics, summa cum laude, and have extensive experience with applying mathematics in diverse contexts, as well as a strong understanding of the fundamental connections between mathematical concepts and how those concepts will be used later in mathematics and science. These connections are invaluable for students to build.

I also hold a BA in Physics and MS in Applied Physics, and I have extensive experience with design and creation of new lab apparatus and activities, as well as hands-on Modeling Instruction techniques, and have done a lot of work teaching students to program physically-accurate 3D simulations of phenomena and model them numerically. As an AP exam reader (grader) for physics and a long-time teacher of AP Physics B, 1, 2, and C, I am very familiar with those curricula and the standards for success in those courses.

Drop me a line to ask about a particular area that you want to improve! I'm happy to work with you on any area of these courses and to provide you alternative approaches, examples, or techniques, if what you've seen in class just isn't working for you. I want to help you build up your ability to attack unfamiliar situations with confidence and skill. Let's get started!
