About Leigh

I am experienced both as a tutor and in teaching. I am currently a full time tutor for 6th grade at Great Oaks Charter School where tutoring is built into the curriculum. Training was provided so that I am able to effectively communicate information to students who may be struggling in a particular subject. In the Fall of 2015 I was also an adjunct professor of biology at Saint Joseph's University. My most recent experiences in teaching have shown me how rewarding it is to teach and tutor students to unlock their full learning potential even if they are struggling at the moment.

My background education is a B.S and an M.S. in Biology. I graduated from college in 2009, graduate school in 2012 and I spent three years in a Ph.D. program studying biology, but I changed my career path when I realized that teaching was my true passion. During my time as a Ph.D. candidate, I had the opportunity to teach many classes from general biology to advanced subjects so I am comfortable with a range of skill levels. Finally, I am comfortable with a range of subjects because of the breadth of my education, which included math, science, and reading-intensive coursework.

I am committed to the learning process and am a firm advocate of the 'growth mindset,' which states that intelligence is not a fixed asset but one that can be built over time with hard work--like a muscle!

I have taken several statistics courses including Non-parametric statistics, two general statistics courses (one undergraduate and one graduate) and Biometry (biological statistics). I have also used statistics in my own research and as part of the curriculum of courses I have taught.

Because science is my passion, I have had extensive education and training in this discipline over 12 years. I have completed coursework in a variety of subjects-biology topics being the most intensive. I have interest and experience in many subjects, however, so I am not limited to biology.

I'm really excited to be working with students on improving their education and growing their minds on a more personalized level. I'll do everything I can to help you succeed. Please contact me if you would like to schedule a lesson or wold like to learn more!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary Math

I have tutored 6th graders for the past year, but some of them were at least one grade level behind so I have also tutored with 5th grade material. I have tutored in a variety of subjects, but mainly math and science. I also have experience explaining tough concepts to students who struggle.

GED

Have tutored two students for the ASVAB test and one for the dental entrance exam. I teach testing strategies as well as content. I am especially qualified for tutoring math.

Reading

I tutored full time last year. One of my topics to tutor was in reading comprehension.

SAT Math

Tutored two students for the ASVAB test for entrance into trade school. They successfully passed and were admitted into the school. I also tutored another student for the dental school entrance exam, but have not heard the result of the test. Tutored high-school math for the past two years. I teach test strategies as well as content.

Great Tutor!

Leigh is tutoring my daughter (a freshman in high school) in both algebra and biology. She has been prompt to respond in all our communications, flexible about finding days & times that work best for everyone to meet, and great with helping my daughter to better understand the subject matter she's covering in her classes. I highly recommend her!
