About Karen

Learning to play an instrument should be a pleasant experience. This does not mean it can be done without hard work. My goal is to get the job done with valid encouragement and enjoyment for the student. If a child feels pushed or punished it is unlikely that he or she will progress for very long.

My approach is traditional. Scales, exercises and pieces are necessary - but they will be tailored to the needs of the student. Once basics are learned individualization can take place and every effort will be made to teach music acceptable to the student in addition to lesson related pieces.

I hold a Bachelor of Music Education K-12. I have 10 plus years of active teaching experience and I have taught in public school.

I am currently accepting students ages 7 through adult - beginners through intermediate level.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Music

Having earned a Bachelor of Music Education Degree, I have been trained in all aspects of Music Education including especially general music. I taught music on the elementary level and continue to teach piano on a regular basis with greater than 10 years' experience. Part of the Music Curriculum was 2 years of music history. I also have permanent certification K-12 in Music Education.

Music History

Having successfully completed a 4 year degree - Bachelor of Music Education including 4 semesters of Music History through Schoenberg, I have the ability to tutor this subject.

Music Theory

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. This training included a full spectrum of education including music theory, history, and application to all basic band instruments. I have taught in public school and always include music theory in private piano lessons as relates to the student's level of need.

Piano

I hold a B. Music Education Degree and a permanent teaching certificate K-12. I have taught piano privately for greater than 10 years and taught public school in Lancaster County PA for 1 year - including Special Education. I also graduated from Wyoming Seminary School of Music and studied private piano at New School of Music under Gisa Adler in Philadelphia, PA. During my College days (Misericordia University, Dallas PA) I played Violin II in the Wilkes Barre Philharmonic Orchestra. I am currently continuing my piano studies - to keep up my skills, discipline my practice and to continue to learn new music.

Very patient and supportive! — My kids are showing lot of excitement to learn piano with her teaching. Karen is motivating the kids by being so friendly and teaching them in a fun way. Very understanding, always on time. She is very reliable, patient and caring. Makes sure the kid gets the concept by spending more time on it. My husband and I would highly recommend her as a piano tutor to anyone seeking to learn piano. ...
