About Karthik

Hi All!

I currently work at Chase Bank as a risk analyst; I majored in math at Penn State University and participated in a wide variety of math/computer science related activities, from number theory research to math club to CodePSU (our annual university-wide programming competition.)

My interest in teaching math began in high school, when I worked at Kumon Math and Reading Center teaching everything from counting to calculus to kids K-10. I also served a private tutor in both Algebra 1 and Geometry during the same time. I took a bit of a break in college to attend to my mathematical coursework and research, but got back into it my senior year as a tutor for Penn State students taking Calculus, Linear Algebra and Diff. Eq. Plus, before starting my job here in Wilmington, I T.A.'ed the "Paradoxes and Infinities" course for the Center for Talented Youth in the lovely town of Bristol, RI.

In my teaching methods, I tend to emphasize methods over memorization, and try to make my students effective problem solvers while they learn the specific techniques needed to succeed in a particular course. Its great to strive for an A in a course or a perfect score on a standardized test, but I also want my students to see beyond immediate gratification and look at the bigger picture, that is, to see how what they learned can possibly help them in the future.

What I expect from my students: dedication. We will learn and solve problems together, while honing a number of other skills in the process. Even if math isn't something you like, I will do my best to adapt and make it as bearable as possible :)

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I've taught all levels of algebra, first for two years at Kumon Math and Reading, in private instruction, and at a CTY course. I believe success in algebra often determines success in precalc/trig and calculus, as most problems students have in the higher courses are related to lack of a good foundation.

Geometry

One of my favorite subjects - I have experience teaching the standard middle/high-school curriculum (two years at Kumon Math and Reading as well as private instruction), and understand some of the common issues students encounter (draw pictures!!). I can also help with understanding college-level non-Euclidean/hyperbolic concepts. All of my college math courses relied in some way on basic geometric concepts, which informs my teaching at all levels.
