Franklin & Marshall College (2016 graduation date) (Mathematics)
While I have never been an 'official' tutor before, I have a wide range of experiences that make me fit for the job.
Just some background: I got a perfect score on the Math Section of the SAT on my first try. My combined score was a 2210. I was a National Merit Finalist, and now attend Franklin & Marshall College where I plan to major in Mathematics and Computer Science. I got a 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam, and an 'A' in Calculus 2 last semester of college. I will be a math tutor in the fall at my college for other students. I also tutor at a nearby elementary school, Wharton Elementary, in a 3rd grade classroom twice a week.
I have worked with ages 8 to 18, and I often tutor friends or children I am babysitting. I have tutored friends in Algebra 1 & 2, pre-calc, and calculus. I am very good at explaining things, and I am the person people come to when they need help studying for math, even now in college. I am friendly and easy-going (I know that is not what 'math major' suggests!) and want to tutor because I truly enjoy it. I love math and want others to love it too! Many kids are afraid of math and I believe that everyone can understand it. My mom avoided math as much as she could when she was young, but now when she realizes she needs it, like for halving a recipe, I love helping her out and showing her that math isn't that bad. While I have never been an 'official' tutor before, I have a wide range of experiences that make me fit for the job.

While my daughter was feeling a little awkward about having a tutor, Julia made her feel more relaxed with the process and was able to provide her with assistance with working on her math skills as well as SAT/ACT test taking strategies.
Julia is dependable and is working out well with my daughter on SAT improvement. She explains things clearly and has a good approach to her tutoring.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra is the building block for all other math, and not understanding it can trip up a student in every future math class. It is highly logical and there are a myriad of ways to approach each concept. This is great because if the technique a teacher is using isn't clicking, there are others I can introduce to aide understanding. I have tutored Algebra for the last 4 years.
I truly believe that many students possess the skills needed to do well on the SAT math section, and just need help familiarizing themselves with the style and format of the test, as well as brushing up on the skills that they may have learned in previous years. Personally, I received an 800 on the SAT math section on my first try, so I know how tricky the questions can be but also how to tackle them. I not only tutored my peers in high school, but continue to tutor high school students in SAT math.
