Thank you for considering me as a prospective tutor. I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science from the University of Delaware. The Environmental Science curriculum included a mix of physical and natural sciences: introductory coursework in biology, chemistry, and physics, along with more advanced coursework in physical geography and geology. I have professional experience as a substitute teacher, an assistant teacher naturalist, as well as in stream water quality monitoring and land use analysis. Currently, I am pursuing graduate study in physical geography.
As a graduate student, I am most interested to serve current college students and adult learners, as well as motivated middle school and high school students. If you have a short-term need for tutoring in earth/physical science, environmental science, geography, biology, introductory chemistry, or introductory algebra-based physics, I will consider your request.
In my instructional approach, I aim to support learners to develop critical thinking processes. Rather than provide direct answers, I model questions that seek to uncover a solution or a pathway to a solution. For example, if a student is unsure how to scale an axis in order to plot a line graph, I would ask what the maximum data value is for that axis and how many gradations are available on the axis. This way, learners can develop a thought process for how to solve a problem, which is absolutely crucial for when information context changes. Thank you for considering me as a prospective tutor. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Scored well above average on the Praxis series content knowledge exam for Earth and Space Science. For years I have collected and studied rocks and minerals. Understanding land surface changes, interactions between the land and atmosphere, as well as human-induced impacts to land surface and atmosphere are continuing interests.
My education background includes 4 years of study in media art, design, and technology. I completed several courses in darkroom and digital photography. I have a working knowledge of both digital and 35mm film cameras.
Scored above average on the Praxis series content knowledge exam for Physical Science. Physical sciences, including Physics and Chemistry, were my favorite subjects in high school. I enjoyed designing and building mousetrap-powered cars and launching table tennis balls across the classroom... all in the name of science! Since an early age, I've always wanted to understand WHY... and Physical Science helps to answer those questions.
