Washington College (Biology)
B.A. McDaniel College (Formerly Western Maryland College) (MEd)
Hello, I am Conci, and I graduated summa cum laude with an undergraduate degree in Biology. I also hold a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I taught for 10 years in a public high school and loved the classroom interactions between students and subject matter. My teaching course load over the years contained the following: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Computer Science. My last 5 years of teaching, I was also the science department chair and mentor teacher who coached and assisted new science teachers. Additional experiences included being chosen by the State of Maryland to create test questions for the Maryland Biology High School Assessment and co-authoring my county's Biology curriculum and assessments. I am currently certified to teach in both Delaware and Maryland.
My Biology degree afforded me the opportunity to hold internships and research jobs at the National Science Foundation, hospitals, and chemical companies. I believe it is important to provide real world applications of content material for a deeper and more practical understanding. After my children were born, I stepped down from my full-time teaching position to tutor part-time. I love the one-on-one experience which allows me to tailor the curriculum to individual student needs. I have tutored almost every subject, including middle school math (up to and through Algebra I), Science (Earth, Biology, Environmental, and Chemistry), Language Arts (Reading and Comprehension, Grammar, Vocabulary), and Social Studies and History. I tutored approximately 15 hours per week for 6 years until we moved overseas. Upon my return, I am anxious to return to the teaching and tutoring arena!
My tutoring style will reflect the student's needs and preferred method of learning. Any additional resources that the student can provide, i.e. textbook, notes, recommended websites from curriculum) will enhance your learning experience but are not necessary for tutoring to occur. I will provide lesson plans to determine prior knowledge, areas of weakness, and practice to master skills and content. Additionally, I can create practice assessments or provide study sessions to prepare for upcoming tests.
I have a strong foundation in Math which allows me to explain the basic concepts of Math. Additionally, I have experience with the Common Core math curriculum which strongly emphasizes explaining concepts and your reasoning in obtaining answers.
I love making the sciences come alive for my students. Although not everyone is going to pursue a science career, Biology is extremely relevant for managing one's health and the environment. With the overwhelming amount of material available via Internet, it is important to have a basic understanding to discern what is true and reasonable.
Please feel free to contact me for a free consultation. At this meeting, we can discuss your needs and determine how I can help you meet those goals. I check my email daily. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
