I am a teacher that has taught reading, social studies, current events, communications, and/or language arts/English for 22 years. For the last year I have been substituting so I now have K-5 experience, even though I have an Advanced License for 6-12 English, Special Education and Elementary Education. I believe that learning is fun and creative while I am effective. Many students still keep in contact with me.
I am a National Endowment Scholar which means I am one out of 15 that was chosen in the country to study Shakespeare for five weeks which included a trip to England to do hands on study. Most importantly, I am a former Nationally Certified teacher through the Board of Professional Teaching Standards.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My certification is a strange one, I am certified English Education 4-12. I have taught 6th grade. That was my first teaching assignment which I taught for two years. I have also substitute on every level for a year so I have a plethora of experience teaching in all subjects and grade levels.
English is the hardest language in the world to learn because every word does not have just one meaning and then we have slang, idioms, puns, personification, etc. I have taught ESL as a class for over 10 years. Many of the students came from India, Africa, Ukraine, China, etc. Many started knowing no English at all and we had to start with word and sound recognition. We went through each of the alphabet and practice the sounds each letter made. From there, we would learn phonics and then add on literary devices while trying to increase fluency in reading.
My teaching certificate is an unique one it is from 5-12. I have taught every grade from 6-12, which includes reading classes. In order to teach reading, you know how to teach phonics and not just through watching Sesame Street :). I have a first command on different method of teaching reading in addition to phonics, but phonics is at what I'm most proficient. I know how to teach the vowel, consonant and blend sounds as well as how to sound a word out. Knowing the sounds each letter can make is the key to understanding phonics. Knowing that the c can be hard or soft and have two different sounds is very important. I won't go through the whole alphabet you get the point. I have taught reading every year of my 22 years of teaching because in order to take English you have to be able to read. Many of my students were not fluent readers, so we would use phonics skills to sound out a word in addition to using context skills. I have also always had ESL students who do not have a command on the English language and needed to use phonics in order to figure out a word.
I have taught Public Speaking as a component in every English class I have ever taught. I did; however, teach a Communications class. This class followed a public speaking curriculum of a community college in hopes that the high school course could be offered with college credit given upon passing. That class was a lot of fun while learning, we even went to see President Obama sworn in! I made sure they learned about consistent eye contact with the audience, adequate pauses, etonation, volume, how to handle distractions and the ability to speak in any situation, such as how to give a public prayer that is accessible for all cultures. We used poems, essays, speeches written by them and others and did impromptu scenarios.
I feel that study skills are individual. What works for one person works may not work for another. The point is to be as organized as possible in order to reduce stress. I have been teaching study skills for 22 years; it is a part of teaching, especially teaching English. You have to be able to teach students how to organize their thoughts and materials. When writing some chose to organize their thoughts by making an outline, others free write, others just start writing and go back and revise later. The same with note taking, some use Cornell notes, I personally make lists, some people color code their subjects. The point is to find a way to organize their information so that studying it will be as easy and stress-free as possible.
