About Thomas

I am a retired school teacher who still loves to help others to reach their full potential. Investing in my own education was an investment in myself. My opportunities, potential, and accomplishments were transformed through my education. I was the first person on either side of my family to graduate from college. My home life was not very conducive to learning and received little encouragement or support when I was in high school. This is a huge motivator for my becoming a teacher, and now a tutor. To be able to provide a structured, interesting, and positive learning environment is my means of fulfilling my desire to make a difference in a way I did not personally experience until I went to college.

I know from graduating college, summa cum laude in 3 years, that if you invest the time and energy, the limitations of one's past experiences can be left in the past. I love tutoring because the 1-to-1 interaction allows the student to find their own points of interest that keep them motivated to learn. Tutoring is tremendously effective in that the environment is tailored to suit the individual student's learning style and focus directly on addressing factors that have limited success in the past. I can tutor in person or online, depending on your preference. I prefer to work with as much of the student's actual classwork and homework as the primary goal should be to succeed immediately in the present subject matter.

I am certified in the State of Delaware as a highly qualified teacher for Grades 5 - 12 in History, Multi-Subject (Psychology, Sociology, etc.), Social Studies, Civics/Government, Economics, & Geography. In my 17 years of teaching, I designed, planned, and implemented lessons for Special Education, College-Preparatory, Honors, AP, IB Middle Years Program, and IB Diploma Program level courses. In addition to my classroom teaching I served as the IB Extended Essay Co-Coordinator for 8 years and IB Extended Essay Supervisor for 12 years to encourage and facilitate: creative and critical thinking, systematic research, and writing skills.

If you have found your history (or other Social Studies) courses boring and unengaging, let me help you find how interesting the subject can be by connecting it to what you love and enjoy. I have had a long history of success in teaching at all curricular levels to a very diverse student population. I am experienced in using IEPs, 504 plans, and personal learning inventories to overcome individual obstacles to success. My goal is to set you on a path where you learn how you learn best, and where you won't need the services of a tutor throughout your educational career.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Government & Politics

I have a Bachelor's of the Arts in Social Studies Education. I have taught, extensively, subjects that fall under the academic heading of Social Studies. I am certified by the State of Delaware as being highly qualified in Social Studies, as well as subjects that fall under that heading, including: History, Geography; Civics/Government; Multi-Subject; & Economics. I am more than just a teacher of Government & Politics, as my own Master's program was in Political Science: American Government

I took an interest in politics and government when I was 9 years old. I have volunteered for political campaigns for positions ranging from school board member to members of the U.S. Congress. Given a lifetime of interest, study, and experiences, I believe I would be an ideal candidate to be your tutor in Government and Politics.
