About Stephanie

Exploring art, its connections to history and the creative process has been my career and passion. Give me a pencil and paper and I am happy! Diverse travel to many places, from the swamps of the Atchafalaya Basin to the glaciers of Iceland, has also fueled this interest.

Drawing, painting and making art have been part of my life from the beginning. Growing up in Western Pennsylvania, my twin sister Leslie and I were exposed to a wide variety of art materials and techniques. My family has a heritage of artistic pursuit; my grandfather was an independent glass designer in Pittsburgh and my father spent a career in graphic arts and advertising. I have a BA in Art from Gettysburg College and an MA in Art History (with a focus on American art) from University of Delaware. Throughout this period, I took on students for drawing and art lessons, encouraging them to explore their own creativity. While in graduate school, I also took elective art conservation classes in painting reconstruction, which cultivated a deeper appreciation of the craft of painting and the use of materials and techniques from different time periods.

My professional experience has been in the museum field as a curator, writer, exhibit designer and fabricator, educator and administrator. I've created projects on art, music history, and multidisciplinary subjects of all kinds. I'm a published author for children and adults with established writing and editing skills. I'm a teaching artist for PegasusArtworks with the Boys and Girls Club of Delaware and a content expert in art history for I'm also an artist, and create colorful, playful works based on nature and coastal themes.

In everything I do, my goal is simple: I want you to explore, learn and create!

I approach music history from the instrumentalist's perspective. I'm a French horn player and have played semi-professionally for more than 20 years in ensembles of all types and sizes. I've curated exhibits in Upstate New York looking at the history of music in America, and I regularly research and speak on works and periods of history as an announcer for several musical ensembles. Currently I play in two brass groups, the Stargazer Brass Quintet and the Salem County Brass Society. The latter has a goal of increasing knowledge and appreciate of music in the regional community and we present awards and a scholarship each year to students in the region.

I grew up with paints, pencils and clay always in my hands. I studied studio art and art history during my academic career, have curated projects exploring individual artists as well as broader periods of history. More importantly, I've never stopped creating. In my own work, I do a lot with pencil, watercolor, acrylics, and found objects. I've been known to paint on driftwood and incorporate found objects into my work. The art world continues to evolve, and to stay current I've taught myself Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. Although I wouldn't say I'm an expert in them, they come in very handy in creating all sorts of media! I enjoy working with students to help broaden their skills, open their eyes to new media, and increase their appreciate of creativity.

Are you looking to learn a new skill or strengthen something in your art? Want to learn more about art and music through all periods of time? Give me a call or email me and we can talk. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have a BA in Studio Art, and those classes included many aspects of drawing using pencil, pen and ink, pastels, charcoal, etc. We practiced drawing from live models as well. I've given drawing lessons in the past to teenagers and students with learning challenges, tailored to their specific needs in collaboration with parents and teachers. I am also a working artist, and begin each project with drawing to plan composition, hone details, etc.

Music History

I am a semi-professional musician, and have played French horn for more than 20 years in orchestras, large brass ensembles, bands, wind ensembles, woodwind quintet, brass quintet, etc. I took music history classes in college related to early music and the music of J. S. Bach. As a museum curator, I have curated projects exploring the history of American music from the 19th century up to the eras of pop and rock. I've also been an announcer for many of the ensembles in which I play, which requires researching, understanding and translating aspects of music history so they are accessible to broad audiences.

I have a BA in Studio Art and my classes included sessions on painting. I've also taken painting reconstruction classes at the U of Delaware with the conservation department--these classes taught how to use materials and techniques related to specific time periods. I'm a working artist, and currently create finished works that often use acrylic and/or watercolor. I'm also a teaching artist for the Boys and Girls Club of Delaware, and one of the most popular art activities is painting (all kinds, all media!), so I regularly work painting classes into their schedule.

Public Speaking

I am experienced at giving public presentations to audiences of all sizes through my work as a curator, educator and upper-level administrator. I can work with students in developing strategies to overcome fear of speaking in public, introduce the use of programs such as PowerPoint and Keynote (including how to prioritize and limit visual aids for maximum effect), and work with them to better understand the difference between different types of public speaking (how to gauge audiences and tailor something to their needs). I've taken speech and drama classes in the past, and was required to give public presentations and lectures in graduate school which were then evaluated and critiqued by peers and professors. I have created and presented public programs for every exhibition I curated as well as classes and workshops on concepts such as program evaluation and basic exhibit design; I've also taken these programs on the road for audiences throughout New York and Delaware.
