About Douglas

Bio

I have over 25 years' experience teaching high school English. As a writer myself, I especially enjoyed teaching writing and research (yes, even grading the papers and yes, I'm telling the truth). My former students still tell me how much they learned from me and how prepared they felt for college after my classes. (Some of them even toss back little quips and quotes they still remember all these years later.)

My former students still tell me how much they learned from me and how prepared they felt for college after my classes. (Some of them even toss back little quips and quotes they still remember all these years later.)

Of course, it was a love of reading and a love of literature that first drew me to teaching. In fact, teaching was supposed to be my day job while I pursued my "real" career as a creator of great literature. Writing and reading are inseparable. As the old song goes, "You can't have one without the other." I believe one of my strengths as a teacher has been my ability to help students write like a reader and read like a writer.

I have a Masters from Washington College (Chestertown, MD) and a B.A. in English from SUNY Stony Brook. I have taught every level of student in grades 9 - 12. I've taught test prep (PSAT, SAT, AP, GRE, ABE). I've taught adults in Night School. I've even had training and experience in writing items for tests like these. I love seeing how what I've learned helps students do better in school, on their dreaded exams, and in their continued educations and careers.

I love my subject, I'm passionate about education, and I genuinely enjoy my students. I look forward to seeing how I can help you or your son or daughter.

Grammar

Grammar

While working for a small Delaware-based educational publishing company, two of the most important projects I wrote were grammar texts. These included instructional material, exercises, and quizzes. Each book takes a different approach to the study of grammar, so I am well versed in both the prescriptivist and descriptivist approaches, though I myself am a firmly committed descriptivist.

Vocabulary

Among the products I contributed to during my 15 years with a small Delaware-based educational publishing company were several successful series of vocabulary texts. My chief contributions were instructional materials and exercises highlighting word-attack skills, especially focusing on etymology and word parts (prefixes, roots, and suffixes).

While writing and editing for a small, Delaware-based educational publishing company, I contributed heavily to a series of vocabulary and writing textbook series aimed specifically at improving student ACT scores.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

While writing and editing for a small Delaware-based educational publishing company, I was a major contributor to a vocabulary series that included passages and questions geared specifically toward practice and preparation for the ACT. Thus, I can not only help students with the processes of "making meaning" from text and finding textual support for all inferences and conclusions, but I can also help them understand the question and choices to better identify the best choice when more than one seem possible.

I possess a master's degree in English and have 25+ years' experience teaching high school English. After retiring from the classroom, for the next 15 years, I wrote and edited ELA instructional materials for a small educational publication in Delaware.

Literature,

Literature

Both my bachelor's and master's degrees are in English Literature. The mainstay of the high school curriculum I taught was English and United States literature. My public school teaching experience includes Advanced Placement in English Literature and Composition as well as the Great Books seminar. During the 15 years I wrote and edited for a small educational publishing company, a major portion of the products I introduced and developed focused on the effective teaching of a variety of literature from a number of educational approaches. These include, in addition to the traditional plot-theme-setting approach, studies in various literary critical theories and real literary analysis.

SAT Writing

As a part time job during my tenure as a high school English teacher, I was trained in and taught a well-known Test-Prep company's SAT-Prep course. While writing and editing for a small Delaware-based educational publishing company, I was part of a team that kept the company abreast of changes to the SAT tests. I was also a significant contributor to this company's SAT-prep materials.

During my 25+ years as a high school English teacher, I taught every grade (9 - 12) and course level (general, college-preparatory, honors, and Advanced Placement). Despite the grade and focus of the course, writing was always my primary interest and concern. I have heard from dozens of former students (including a judge, a state legislator, a PhD/MD/JD patent attorney, and several teachers who credit my instruction with preparing them for success in college and graduate school. Among the biggest and most successful product lines I worked on during my publishing career were two 9 - 12 cross-discipline writing series. In a very read sense, I wrote the book(s) on writing instruction.
