About Kate

I consider myself a librarian, which to me comes through in how I teach and tutor. As a librarian, I feel like its my job to make certain that everyone I interact with has access to the materials they need and the time and space to learn in the way that suits them best. One of the my major philosophies of education and one that has been strengthened in my work as a school librarian and a substitute teacher in the Cape Henlopen School District is to meet students where they are. When I worked as a reference librarian, answering questions at the desk, I was able to hone this skill of understanding how do I use the skills and information I have to assist the student in their work.

My educational background is strong in English Literature, Classics and an understanding of the world of digital resources and research. I graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College with a major in Classics and a minor in British Literature, I then studied graduate level Classics for two years at the University of Victoria in Wellington, New Zealand. In 2011, I graduated from the University of Michigan School of Information with a Masters of Information Science with a focus on Library Science. Since that time, I have worked as a school librarian, a substitute teacher, and a fact checker of nonfiction.

English and Literature are a major of all that I do. As a librarian, I'm constantly reading and paying attention to shifts in the world of publishing. I studied Literature in college and have substituted for AP level courses at Cape Henlopen High School.

My background in History comes through studying Classics in undergraduate and graduate courses and a deep love of history. I have worked as a fact-checker for nonfiction books, which helps to keep me up to date on history resources as well as reading history nonfiction in my spare time.

I believe that every student can learn and understand any topic given the time and space to understand how they learn. As a teacher, I know that I need to help my students by learning where they are and work with them to help them succeed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

My undergraduate major was in Classics. I studied abroad for a semester with College Year in Athens. At the University of Victoria in Wellington, New Zealand, I completely masters coursework and research for a master's thesis. Throughout this time, I studied Ancient Greek and Latin.
