About Erin

I am an elementary and secondary educator with 12 years of experience teaching. I am highly qualified in the State of Delaware to teach elementary education, and secondary social studies, as well as fully certified in special education from K-12 (Delaware does not have a "highly qualified" distinction for special education). I have extensive training above and beyond the basic needs for certification, including "cluster courses" designed for teachers including one entitled "Reading in the Content Areas" in order to help struggling readers access content-text.

I've spent 5 years teaching students with special needs of all kinds, 6 years at the high school level, and 4 at the elementary level. 7 years ago I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and have slowly come to realize that the rigors of teaching full classrooms may not be in the cards for me anymore. I currently run a volunteer organization espousing the importance of civic living and participation, but I will forever have the "teaching bug"!

I have had extensive training in the Common Core State Standards for the past 3 years while I was a full-time elementary school teacher at a local school district.

I graduated from University of Delaware with a degree in Political Science Education. Essentially a dual degree, participants had to complete all course requirements for Political Science, as well as as all requirements to become certified to teach Social Studies at the secondary level. I graduated with a 3.0.

I hold current certifications in teaching children with special needs in the state of Delaware from K-12. I have taught special education at the high school level (mostly math) in a co-teaching environment for 4 years. I taught special education in a co-teaching environment at the elementary level for 2 years.

If you are a student reading this profile, you are already well on your way to succeeding, and parents, you should feel the same! Self-awareness is so important in today's fast-paced educational world. Consider giving me a chance to work with you (or your child) one-on-one setting, and let's achieve together!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am certified in the state of Delaware as a teacher of exceptional children (children with special needs) in grades k-12. I have significant experience adapting, accommodating, modifying, and altering modality of learning depending on my students' needs. I will work hard to make sure I truly understand what a particular student needs, and doing everything in my power to help them achieve. My special education certification includes all special education and I have extensive teaching experience with ADHD students both male and female and at the high school and elementary level.

Common Core

Each lesson in my classroom was directly tied to a Common Core standard, as well as subject-specific standards if they applied. Essentially, the Common Core is a means of focusing students to read for comprehension as well as utilize a deeper understanding of mathematics than the predecessor standards may have hoped for.

Criminal Justice

Many of my elective courses during college were related to criminal justice. So much so, that when I taught at the high school level I taught Introduction to Criminal Justice to high school seniors as the final course in the Criminal Justice career pathway. I have experience with not only legal and criminal justice theory (it's not just broken windows anymore) to practical forensic science understanding.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified and highly qualified in the state of Delaware as an elementary teacher and am also qualified as a teacher of exceptional children (children with special needs) in grades k-12. I have significant experience in the Common Core state standards, as well as Next Generation Science Standards, and social studies standards. Any student could benefit from one-on-one sessions with a caring and qualified teacher like me!

Elementary Math

I am a highly-qualified elementary educator with 12 years experience. I have years teaching elementary reading and mathematics, as well as additional certifications in teaching children with a range of ability levels and needs. During my tenure as a full time teacher I taught standards-based lessons, and am extremely comfortable working with students individually to meet their specific needs and allow them to succeed.

Microsoft Outlook

I have a Master's degree in Educational Technology from Wilmington University. This included extensive training in using Microsoft Outlook, as well as the entire Microsoft Professional Suite. We studied this program in order to utilize their functionality to increase teaching productivity and the ability to interact with co-workers and parents.

Political Science

I graduated from the University of Delaware in 2003 with a degree in Political Science Education. That degree included all the coursework needed for a political science degree, in addition to all needed coursework for secondary teaching credentials. I am very well versed in political science and love it to this day.

Social Studies

I am certified as a highly-qualified social studies teacher in the state of Delaware. I achieved this status through receiving my degree in Political Science Education from the University of Delaware in 2003. I am qualified to teach any and all social studies (even economics)!

Special Needs

I am certified in the state of Delaware as a teacher of exceptional children (children with special needs) in grades k-12. I have significant experience adapting, accommodating, modifying, and altering modality of learning depending on my students' needs. I will work hard to make sure I truly understand what a particular student needs, and doing everything in my power to help them achieve.
