I am and have been for as long as I can remember interested in the sciences, natural and otherwise. My interest and knowledge in this area has grown to the point where I want to not only be able to apply it on my own, but be able to share that knowledge with others; help them to understand and become interested in such a vital part of our everyday lives, even when we can't see it. I have experience as both an undergraduate and graduate tutor and instructor as well as private lessons. With undergraduate and graduate degrees in biology, chemistry and molecular and cellular biology, as well as studies in philosophy, neuroscience and genetics and experience teaching biology and ecology labs, I'm uniquely able to combine and/or separate the various subjects as the student finds suits them and even present them from a lay-perspective. I have 6 years' experience as a tutor/instructor.
Science must be balanced by philosophy and individual thought, not simply accepting everything at face value. In other words, we must always be willing to question, to learn, to broaden our outlook and horizons.
In that vain I hope to be able to help others take their first or advancing steps in these areas. I also hope to be able to provide a satisfactory experience and certainly would not charge a cent if the student walked away without a complete understanding of the concept presented. I have experience with age groups ranging from middle school to adult and can adjust my methods accordingly. My methods include independent study, flash cards, and having the student make a lesson up to present the subject as they understand it before I come into the process. Other methods come into play as suited to the specific student and situation/subject. I hope to provide a lesson and an understanding for the student such that they could teach it back to me.
My years as an undergraduate and graduate student, as well as independent/thesis research and instructing students in biology and ecology lab lessons and activities make me qualified to help students seek a better understanding in these and other scientific areas.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. I would be happy to answer any queries or even just talk to let you get a feel for my methods/experience. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
