I have worked in a school district in this area, therefore, I am familiar with teaching practices. I do sometimes use some of the older methods of teaching if a child is not learning it the new way, then teaching the new way once they master the concept.
I also have been homeschooling my own children since pre-k. My oldest is now in 6th grade and thriving. This gives me lots of experience with the differing learning styles and teaching methods. My daughter has a minor learning problem. I have had to use many different teaching methods for her to learn a new concept.
I also have taken courses in early childhood education. This gives me an understanding of how child's mind processes things and how every child is different in so many ways.
I am willing to try numerous ways to be able to reach the child educationally so that they too may enjoy learning seeing how this is a lifelong process. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked in elementary schools in the past, helping to teach all subjects in various grade levels. I also have continuously homeschooled my own children since pre-k. My oldest is now in sixth grade. I have also taken courses in early childhood education which helped my to see how differently children developed. I also hold a BA in psychology which allows me to be knowledgable of how the mind works in general.
Each person, children included, have their own way of learning. I believe learning how to learn is vital to a person because learning is a lifelong skill. Everyone of us needs to learn how to learn and how we learn in particular. This helps us be successful and able to continuously grow.
I have lots of experience using the book "Teach your child to read in 100 Lessons". I have used this book which shows phonics and gradually works its way up to words, sentences, and paragraphs. I have also used other forms of phonics and sounds with pictures to teach a child to eventually read. Typically phonics is started using the consonants first. I like how this book also uses short vowel sounds so that the child is receiving a feeling of mastering reading sooner.
Phonics is the basis for all reading and is very important that this stepping stone is mastered.
