About Debra

Over the last thirty-five plus years, I worked in various capacities in the education profession: elementary teacher, middle school teacher, high school teacher, homebound teacher, and adult education teacher, as well as a middle school counselor, middle school administrator, and high school administrator. In my last position, I created a community-based program, which included vocational and recreational experiences for adults with moderate cognitive disabilities. The one thing that I quickly missed during those first months since retiring was my interaction with students. I truly missed visiting students’ homes and community meeting places for homebound instruction of those students who are unable to attend school due to medical reasons or disciplinary sanctions.

In addition to this practical experience, I am currently certified in Special Education, middle school math, school counseling, school administration, and elementary education. I have a B.A. in Elementary Education, and two master degrees, one in Curriculum and Instruction and the other in School Counseling. These experiences have given me a well-rounded perspective of learner needs. They also validate my belief in the power teachers have to increase confidence and skill levels in students.

I have experience as classroom teacher of middle school English Language Arts. And I have experience as ELA tutor and homebound instructor for elementary, middle and high school students in Christina, Colonial, Red Clay, and New Castle County Vo-Tech schools, as well as several charter schools: Gateway Lab, Prestige Academy, Great Oaks, and Moyer.

I am an effective teacher because I know my subject matter, I know students, and I like students. I am a teacher who can relate to every student and cause every student to relate to me. I work to develop confidence by helping students prove and know themselves as individuals with greater capabilities.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
