About Lisa

I am an educator with a Master's degree in Education and a focus in School Counseling, I have been working with children and adolescents for as long as I can remember. When I was in middle and high school, I babysat all ages from infants to preteens. While in college, I worked as a preschool teacher at La Petite Academy. I then had three children of my own, currently ranging in ages from 9-18 years old. I have experience working with both male and female children/students, as well as with children with special needs, having a daughter with Down syndrome. I have been a teacher for Vacation Bible School multiple years as well. Additionally, I have two years of experience in the school setting, one year of which was as a Spanish Teacher for levels I and II.

I also have experience tutoring, helping a Hispanic adult pass their English proficiency exam, and her 9 yr old daughter build her reading, spelling, grammar, comprehension, and study skills. I love knowing that I can help others succeed, even if just a little bit. Building confidence and being nurturing to a student is key, but one must also be firm and fair in their delivery. I also believe in holding students accountable and responsible for their own actions and success. If they work hard and try their best, they will see positive results. If a student does not try, it will show in the outcomes they receive. I am willing to try various techniques to help my students, as I am fully aware that everyone learns differently. I do not give up, unless my student gives up, and even then, I still try to reach them in any way I can. When given the opportunity, I am determined to help all students succeed academically, personally/emotionally, and in their careers.

I have been exposed to Spanish and its culture in some way, shape, or fashion, since birth. I was born in Puerto Rico. I moved from P.R. to Florida when I was a toddler. While my mother encouraged English in the home when we moved to Florida, the rest of my extended family still only spoke Spanish. When I was in elementary school, we moved back to P.R. for a few months, and I even attended school for a short period. When I was in high school, I took four years of Spanish, was part of the Spanish Honors Society, and won several competitions, earning Superiors in each event. Professionally, I have used Spanish with customers while working at Citibank, JP Morgan Chase, Discover Financial Services, and Wells Fargo. I also taught Spanish I and II at a charter high school for the 2014-2015 school year. While teaching, I followed National World Language ACFTL Standards set for proficiency, created lesson plans, oral and written assessments, power-point presentations, and various hands on projects for the students.

I pride myself on encouraging all students speak, read, and write clearly and concisely. Grammar, reading, and comprehension are cornerstones to excelling academically as a whole. The more a child reads, the better a student they naturally become. Vocabulary and spelling gets stronger, comprehension gets deeper, and knowledge is wider. While I do not have formal qualifications in English certification, I have skills as a educator in general that allows me to help students in multiple areas.

While at Anna P Mote Elementary, I did classroom instruction daily. A large portion of the population was Hispanic, so it was important to be strong in both Spanish and English, to be able to communicate and teach the students better. I taught students what they could do to be better people and stronger students and helped them with their language skills to make them stronger in both languages. I also helped as an after school Math tutor, giving tips on ways to study and retain information.

I hope to hear from anyone that is eager to learn Spanish, brush up on their Spanish, or just needs help passing Spanish for their high school world language requirement. I am also available to help individuals build their English skills as a second language. I would also love to hear from anyone that wants to help their elementary students build up their reading, grammar, spelling, comprehension, and study skills in general to reach their appropriate grade level. I am currently available during the day from 9am-1pm Monday through Friday, and some evenings and weekends. Please contact me for specific availability to coordinate our schedules.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I have a Master's degree in School Counseling and have worked in the educational setting two years. The focus of School Counseling at the high school level is highly concentrated upon guiding students toward graduation and beyond. Part of that, is academic counseling, which includes guidance in selecting colleges right for you, that fit your needs and wants, understanding the financial aid aspects, filling out college applications, knowing the process of applying to colleges, taking the SAT, ACT, and content area exams required for college, understanding the requirements of individual colleges, understanding high school transcripts, and graduation requirements of your state, and so much more. I love working with students to help them get to the next level of their educational journey and future career path.

ESL/ESOL

I was born in Puerto Rico and was there until I was a toddler. While I was not raised there, I have visited a couple times, having spent months at a time there, when I was eight and fifteen. I also took four years of Spanish in high school, and was a member of the Spanish Honors Society. During that time, I earned Superiors in every competition I entered. I have been the only Spanish speaking associate relied upon on my team, while working at Wells Fargo, JP Morgan Chase and Discover Financial Services. Additionally, I was on the Spanish team at Citibank. Currently I am the primary contact for outreach to the Spanish speaking families at the Down Syndrome Association of Delaware.

Having said all that, my primary language is English, as it has always been the only language spoken at home while growing up. I grew up in Florida, and typically only use my Spanish skills in a professional capacity. Having a strong knowledge of both languages, gives me the ability to understand and communicate with my clients, while teaching them English. It also allows me to immerse them in the target language, while giving them the comfort of knowing they will be understood in their own language when necessary. I would be glad to be the one to help your employee better himself and his skills sets, so you can both benefit.

Reading

I have a Masters degree in Education and have taught Spanish and Guidance in the school setting, as well as religious education at Vacation Bible School every summer. I also have three children of my own, and have been quite hands on with their educational progress, ensuring that both my typical children have been in their schools' Talented and Gifted programs for those students that are above the rest of their classmates in their grade level, and my oldest daughter is now at the University of Delaware as a Biology major. My third child is special needs, yet, even she reads as well, and is read to regularly.

Study Skills

As an educator, I have come across different learning and studying styles of hundreds of students. Not everything works for everyone, but there are some key components to having basic study skills. Learning how to manage your time wisely, having basic reading, writing, and note taking skills, listening, and test taking tips, will help students succeed. Helping students to figure out what works for them is an important step to helping them learn how to study.
