I have been teaching kids Chinese for 6+ years and ALL my kids love me! One thing they often say is "Ms. Cheng is fun!" I consider it as the best compliment a language teacher can get because learning a language is not an easy thing, especially hard for beginners and kids. The key is to keep the kids focused, engaged and interested for a long time. This is especially challenging because kids' attention span is naturally short. In my opinion, being able to keep students curious and engaged during classes is a golden standard of a good language teacher, or any teacher.
I have created and refined many methods to keep my students engaged throughout my 6+ years of teaching. My students are in different age groups: the youngest student I have had is 3 year old, and the oldest was a high school student. For younger kids (younger than 6), I use activity based methods to get them familiar with the sounds of the language. Their initial goal is to be able to listen and respond to simple Chinese words and then build things up from there. At this age, it's all verbal with no writing or boring pinyin introduced.
For older kids (age 6+), I emphasize reading/writing. My theory is that it is very important to get them to read/write Chinese characters., because they can't go too far without being able to read. Reading is important because it inspires the kids to study on their own by reading simple stories or even navigating a Chinese menu, helping them build up their vocabularies on their own and making them feel good about themselves. In addition, by being able to write, the language becomes more practical, for example, the kids would be able to communicate in phone texts/emails, and this is very encouraging for kids.
Overall if you want your kids' Chinese to be somewhat useful someday, reading/writing is important. Learning how to read is slower in the beginning, but once your ki
