About MICHAEL

I'm an experienced teacher. I've taught courses in Linux, relational database design and SQL, web application development (Linux - Apache - MySQL - Php), Javascript, Excel, and Access.

I learned these skills on the job and by taking classes from Microsoft and other companies. I have worked as a computer programmer / software developer and manager at the Smithsonian, New York University, Georgetown University, and George Washington University, as well as the Federal Judiciary. Along the way I earned Master's degrees in Museum Administration and Library Science.

Whether you are a student working on class projects or someone who just wants to gain expertise as a hobby, I would like to hear from you. Although I specialize in MS applications, I am qualified to provide tutoring in the basics of Javascript and Python.

My time is flexible during the evenings and weekends.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary Math

I have a mastery of elementary math. Some of the topics included in elementary math are working with fractions, order of operations, basic algebra, the metric system, and more.

I refreshed my memory of these topics by checking my son's homework ;-)

JavaScript

I have enhanced web pages using JavaScript to perform input field validation, data manipulation, mouse over effects, and other user interactions. Some of the web apps that where I employed JavaScript (and JQuery) include the Federal Law Clerks Information System, the GW Library Catalog, and the GW Library exhibits system. I can teach students the JavaScript syntax, how to use arrays, variables, alerts, string comparisons, and other typical uses for Javascript.

Linux

I have experience managing Linux web servers and web applications. Expert at bash shell scripting. Experienced with Linux system administration and command line tools such as awk, sed, grep, tar, file management, ftp, etc.

Microsoft Access

I have taken formal courses on application development with MS Access and I use Access on a daily basis in my current day job. I am expert with Access table, queries, forms, and reports.

Microsoft Excel

I have worked with Excel for over ten years preparing reports and data visualizations. I am currently using Excel to generate reports for library statistics at George Washington University where I am the Systems Librarian.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I am a Project Manager and I have been using PowerPoint on the job for many years, especially when facilitating meetings. I also use PowerPoint to give presentations as computer user conferences.

Microsoft Word

I use Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access almost every day.

SQL

I use SQL on a regular basis in my job as a Systems Librarian at GWU. I use SQL and SQLPlus to query Oracle, MySQL, and Access databases. I can help you learn how to create SQL select statements, including the different types of table 'joins'. I can show you how to use SQL to perform bulk loads of database records, or to update, delete, or insert new records.
