About Taylor

My work experiences, personal values, and educational philosophies align with the work of tutoring, providing high quality supplemental educational experiences for the students I work with. I have intimate knowledge and deep respect for how the study of English, and particularly literature, develop students’ intellectual curiosity, empathy, and creativity. My most profound educational experiences occurred in English classrooms, spaces where I was able to expand and deepen my knowledge of my place and importance in the world, and where I developed and improved my rhetorical style. English classes build the infrastructure upon which students create and refine their sense of intellectual risk, and I would greatly enjoy assisting in that development.

For two years I was the lead educator with an arts-based nonprofit, where I designed and facilitated curriculum around photography, storytelling, and social justice. I facilitated these workshops alongside DCPS history and humanities teachers, and with DC-based youth organizations. My primary work is the work of poetry. I am an apprentice to words; how they can effect change, how they undo themselves, how they shift depending on location and temporal settings. For the past two years I’ve worked solely on becoming a better reader and writer. During that time, I’ve received multiple fellowships and residencies to support my work as a poet. As I operate outside of a traditional work schedule, I am a self-starter and determined worker. Additionally, I’ve facilitated poetry workshops for students in elementary schools to universities in the Washington, DC area. It’s a joy to introduce students to the rigor and creative potential that poetry has to build upon and broaden their analytic skills with other forms of literature. I've tutored students at all educational levels, and worked with high school students in particular to improve their reading and writing skills for the SAT and ACT. I'm an avid reader, and read one book per week. I'm excited to help students enjoy their English studies, and encourage them to push past their expectations. I received perfect scores in the Critical Reading and Writing sections of the SAT, and had a consistently high GPA throughout college. I'm excited to connect with students of all ages who are ready to improve and strengthen their skills in Reading, Writing, Comprehension, and Literature analysis. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
