About Kristen

My name is Kristen and I have recently moved to Washington DC! I am teaching Kindergarten at an elementary school in NW DC. Before moving to DC I was living in Connecticut where I taught first grade and tutored students from Kindergarten through high school in subjects ranging from pre-algebra, elementary math, biology, geometry, social studies and history and many more. I have a lot of experience teaching elementary and middle school students.

I love having the opportunity to work one on one or in a small group with students on skills that they can improve on. I understand that students learn in all different manners and it is the responsibility of the tutor or teacher to reach them. I help students with the material, but also with study skills in general so that they can have solid study skills set in place for future school success.

I studied several college level math courses in college. I have also taught elementary school math for the past 3 years and tutored many middle school students. I have a great passion for teaching and learning math!

I have taught elementary school for two years now. Prior to teaching I was a student teacher and intern for two years where I gained experience in all grade levels teaching math, reading, writing, science and social studies.

I look forward to working with students around the DC area. I encourage you to contact me as I am more than happy to help you in any subject. I love teaching and learning and hope to help you learn in the best way possible!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I excelled in math throughout high school and took several college courses. I've tutored 8th grade students in algebra 1.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been an elementary school classroom teacher for the past two years. Before receiving my certification, I worked as an intern and student teacher for two years for grades k-6. During my internship I taught all subjects and worked with all students in both whole group, small group and individual capacities. I also have my Master's degree in Elementary Education where I took several classes reviewing the general information that would be taught in all elementary classrooms as well as passed the Praxis Elementary Content test.

Elementary Math

I studied elementary math and took several college leveled courses in math. I also teach elementary school.

Geometry

Succeeded in my high school geometry course. Took several college level math courses.

Phonics

I am an elementary school teacher. I have taught kindergarten and first grade where most of the focus for the first half of the year is on phonics and phonemic awareness. I have taught Fundations which is a program that is primarily focused on phonics.

Prealgebra

I took several math courses in college and excelled in high school math. I have tutored students in middle school and high school math.

Sociology

I have a minor in Sociology from my undergraduate degree at the University of Connecticut. I took several Sociology courses including methods of social research, low income families, issues in human sexuality, social theory, class, power and inequality, population and social intolerance and injustice. I also took several human development and family study classes that are linked to sociology theories and research.

Study Skills

I have tutored several students in the past in study skills. We worked to find the best methods of study for that individual and studied for several different tests using those methods. All the student that I have tutored in study skills have seen improvement in their grades. I help students with their note taking, highlighting and annotating information and summarizing for important facts. I help students find what is the most useful for their studying; youtube videos, rereading materials, note cards, diagrams and charts that display the information in a different way and games.
