About Michael

Hi! I'm Michael, a composer originally from England, now living in the Washington area. As a child I loved to play the piano, sing, and play the oboe in my youth orchestra, and through those activities I was exposed to the weird and wonderful world of new music. I developed a passion for composing, and went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, before winning a scholarship to study at Cornell University with the renowned composer Steven Stucky.

While there, I worked closely as a teaching assistant for music theory, and with the choral ensembles, improving their ear training and helping them understand what they were singing from an analytical perspective, as well as furnishing them with historical and stylistic context. My enthusiasm for music, and for art, literature, science, and the wonders of the world always spills over into my teaching, and I love to help my students to develop passion for their interests and refine their knowledge. I now teach part time through the Center for Talented Youth as a music theory instructor.

I studied music composition from September 2007 to July 2011 earning full honors. From there I was awarded an all-expenses paid scholarship to Cornell University on the merits of my compositions. I am currently working on my doctoral dissertation (to be defended Nov. 2016) to receive the degree of Doctor of the Musical Arts. In the mean time, I have been teaching music theory for the Center for Talented Youth (CTY) at Johns Hopkins University.

I'd love to hear from you! If you want to learn more about music, composing, analysis, orchestration, and arranging, I'm your guy!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have studied music composition formally for the last 8 years, and informally since I was 17. I am currently a professional composer receiving performances internationally, winning commissions and competitions.

Ear Training

Through my work for the Center for Talented Youth and Johns Hopkins, I have been teaching students ear training as part of their music theory curriculum. While at Cornell from 2011-2015, I also taught music theory to both the Cornell Glee Club and Chorus, and in the Music Major course, Tonal Theory 1.

Music History

Over the last 15 years I have immersed myself in learning music history. At the Royal Northern College of Music I received very high scores in my history electives, and my current doctoral dissertation for Cornell University is focused on a recent major work of British composition, and its influence on contemporary music since.

Sight Singing

At the Center for Talented Youth, and at Cornell University, I taught many students the techniques and discipline required to learn sight singing. My approach is friendly and patient, and places a lot of emphasis on regular work alone, encouraged by weekly (or more frequent) tutoring sessions. I have noticed that those students who adopted my methods improved markedly in a short time.
