About Rob

I am a second-year Master in International Relations candidate at Johns Hopkins SAIS, and have BA in Psychology from Duke University. I speak French, Italian and Spanish, and have over a year of teaching experience. I taught one-on-one Business English in Paris for six months, to many different professionals at all levels, from absolute beginners to perfect speakers who only want accent or speed training. My primary objective is to teach English efficiently, while giving my clients an enjoyable experience.

When teaching Business English in Paris, I was placed with clients such as a deputy minister of justice within two weeks. With my wide academic and work background, I can speak your professional language - I've successfully taught everyone from deputy ministers, executives and intelligence officers to students and stay-at-home parents.

Lessons focus on your learning goals, while I derive content from your personal interests. My teaching style is communicative - that means that you do most of the talking, while I guide the lesson and discuss technical points that match your specific objectives. I use my background in cognitive psychology to not just share information, but place it in your long-term memory and ensure that you can quickly recall it.

Please contact me to schedule lessons, or to speak and see whether I'm the right teacher for you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have a year of Business English and General English teaching experience, for clients of all types and at all levels. I also have a CELTA certificate, which is the gold standard of English teaching certificates, and received a "Pass A" grade (given to top 3% of US trainees). My teaching style is communicative - students learn mostly by speaking and doing activities, rather than by listening to me talk. This is more interesting for the student, promotes long-term internalization of learning material, and promotes students' ability to speak English faster and more naturally.

Grammar

I am a CELTA-certified ESL/ESOL teacher, and received a "Pass A" grade, given to the highest 3% of American trainees. In addition, I graduated at the top of my class from Duke University after following a writing-centered curriculum, and am now writing regular, highly formal papers in my master's program. Finally, I received an 800 on my SAT Reading section and a 790 in the Writing section.

Reading

I am a CELTA-certified ESL/ESOL teacher, and received a "Pass A" grade, given to the highest 3% of American trainees. In addition, I graduated at the top of my class from Duke University after following a reading- and writing-centered curriculum, and am now continuing a similar curriculum for my master's degree in international relations. Finally, I received an 800 on my SAT Reading section and a 790 in the Writing section.

Vocabulary

I am a CELTA-certified ESL/ESOL teacher, and received a "Pass A" grade, given to the highest 3% of American trainees. In addition, I graduated at the top of my class from Duke University after following a writing-centered curriculum, and am now following a similar, incredibly diverse curriculum for my master's degree in international relations. I received an 800 on my SAT Reading section and a 790 in the Writing section. Finally, I took a test that estimated my English vocabulary to be in the top 0.12% of English speakers worldwide, at 30,000 words.

Writing

I graduated "magna cum laude" from Duke University after studying a writing-oriented, liberal-arts curriculum. Most of my work now, as a graduate student in international relations at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, is spent writing analytical and persuasive essays and papers. I focus on paragraph and essay structure, as well as the degree of formality of writing, which varies according to your audience and your message.

(Back in high school, I also received a 790 out of 800 on the writing section of the SAT.)
