About Shantum

My name is Shantum and I am medical student at the George Washington University School of Medicine.

Over the past several years I have dedicated much time to helping peers and students reach their potential in various fields. I have a strong interest in mathematics, the sciences (especially cell biology, anatomy, microbiology, biochemistry, general chemistry, and organic chemistry). While at NYU I was a Resident Assistant and tutor as well as an advisor/mentor to freshmen students entering college. Often I would help them study for their exams and take time to teach them effective studying strategies.

It is very important to understand that just as one must take time to learn a specific subject, in order to be successful one must also know the proper way to learn. I've seen students go about learning in the wrong manner - memorizing lists instead of understand concepts. My strategy involves repetition and practice; we only move on to the next topic once you have a strong grasp of the initial. And we continuously review the topics until they become elementary. This tactic has helped me do well in my courses. It has made topics that many students find tedious to learn, like microbiology and anatomy, more palatable and (hopefully) enjoyable.

I also have a strong interest in teaching languages and music. In high school I trained at the Juilliard school in classical guitar and continued my classical guitar studies while at NYU. I've played classical guitar and learned music theory for nearly 17 years now.

I have trained under Turkish guitarist Cem Duruoz and Juilliard professor Tali Roth, so I know teaching strategies used by the best in the field. My interest in music and languages goes hand in hand. I grew up speaking English and Hindi. Classical guitar and Spanish culture was what first led me to learn Spanish. I taught my self to read and write Urdu, picked up French, and am currently learning Farsi. Language, like any other subject, definitely involves memorization. But the key is repetition, and hopefully with my instruction you will be able to learn languages more quickly.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Guitar

I started playing classical guitar in 5th grade. In high school I was accepted to the Julliard Pre-College program and traveled to Julliard every Saturday for lessons in classical guitar and music theory. My repertoire includes pieces by Villa-Lobos, Bach, Brouwer, Mozart, Tarrega, and many others.
