I've always loved learning--so much so that I never left school! After graduating college with honors/Phi Beta Kappa, I went on to a graduate program in art history, where I earned my PhD. I worked in the art world in NYC for a few years and tutored high school students at elite Manhattan private schools in History and English. I've always loved learning--so much so that I never left school! After graduating college with honors/Phi Beta Kappa, I went on to a graduate program in art history, where I earned my PhD. I worked in the art world in NYC for a few years and tutored high school students at elite Manhattan private schools in History and English. I recently moved back to my home base in the DMV and am now an Upper School History Teacher at a private school in the DC suburbs where I teach World and US history and honors classes and advise a group of ninth graders.

I have experience teaching high school and college classroom courses, classes of adult learners, students with learning differences and ADHD, and tutoring from the high school to graduate level. My teaching, tutoring, writing, and research experience combine to make me a great resource for improving your writing, grammar, organization, and study skills in any course, but particularly in History and English courses, ESL, and professional writing. I am just as excited as my students are (if not more) when I see them improve.

I worked in the publications department at an art museum as a copy editor for major exhibition catalogues. I have taught ESL, from the basic to intermediate level, on a volunteer basis for 5 years. My writing has been recognized by awards and grants on the undergraduate and graduate level. I formerly taught SAT and GRE prep where my strength was helping students improve their reading and writing scores.

I have an undergraduate major, a master's degree, and PhD in art history. I have worked in 2 major art museums in D.C. and have taught college courses in art history and architectural history before moving on to the auction house world.

As a full time teacher, my schedule is the same as most students, and I have lots of experience, and a desire to help you succeed. Message me to set up a lesson!

Art History,

Art History

I majored in Art History in college, where I wrote an Honors thesis and received the departmental award for Art Historical Writing. I went on to complete a Master's degree in 2012 and a Ph.D. in Art History in 2018 and was nominated for an award for my dissertation. I specialize in 17th century Dutch painting, and have presented my work at several conferences and have won travel fellowships. I taught Art History college courses at the introductory and advanced level, and during my graduate study I also worked at the National Gallery of Art and the Hirshhorn Museum (modern art) in Washington, D.C. I worked for several years as a Senior Researcher in Old Master Paintings at an auction house in New York.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

For 5 years, I taught weekly adult ESL classes through a volunteer program, and my students ranged from beginner to advanced level, and come from all over the globe. The classes used the direct method (no translation from the students' native language), and focused on grammar and conversation, particularly "real world" topics. I also taught an advanced architectural history college course abroad, and I helped the students, all of whom learned English as a second language, improve their writing skills in English and master subject vocabulary.

Study Skills,

Study Skills

I have several years of experience with individual tutoring at the high school and college level helping students prepare for tests (including standardized tests) and major assignments. I taught college courses as an instructor of record for 4 years while I was completing my own degree and am very familiar with the expectations of college courses and how to manage time and organize information for assignments. In addition, I have experience as a professional editor and proofreader and have edited museum publications as well as student work. I have a Ph.D. in Art History and work as a researcher, so I use organizational and study skills in my job to construct essays on short deadlines.

During my PhD in Art History, I wrote long research papers regularly. I have taught college and high school history courses in which I help students write short papers and communicate their ideas clearly. I also have a number of work experiences in English: I worked in the Publications department at an art museum where I edited texts for clarity and work on bibliographies and back matter for publications. I taught English as a Second Language to adults for 5 years on a volunteer basis, and I previously tutored and taught classes of SAT preparation, where I specialized in the reading and writing sections.

SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

I have experience tutoring SAT students on a one-on-one basis, teaching SAT prep classroom courses of 15-20 students, and proctoring tests. Rather than having students memorize answers, I focus on strategies for tackling question types, preparing students to use their time wisely on the test, and building confidence by having students teach me to answer questions. On the Reading section, I help students quickly zero in on the question and the information needed to answer it, and teach strategies for eliminating confusing wrong answers.
SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

I have experience tutoring SAT students on a one-on-one basis, teaching SAT prep classroom courses of 15-20 students, and proctoring tests. On the Writing section, I help students use their prior knowledge of grammar to their advantage, and pinpoint areas for them to practice with grammar rules early on. I enjoy helping students maximize points on the Essay section with a persuasive response that focuses on exactly what the College Board wants to see.
Writing,

Writing

As a Ph.D. Candidate in Art History, I write long, scholarly papers on a regular basis, as well as short proposals and abstracts. I won the departmental award in college for Art Historical Writing, and in graduate school I have had many papers accepted at professional conferences. I work in the publications department at an art museum, where I help copy-edit and revise curators' essays and catalogue texts for clarity. I focus on helping others communicate clearly without sacrificing the meaning or personality behind their writing.
