About Josh

I was born in Brussels, Belgium in 1992 but my parents moved to Washington, DC when I was just a few months old and I have always considered the latter to be “where I’m from.”

I have also lived in Brussels (my family moved back there from 1999 to 2006); Paris (5 months of study abroad, 8 months of teaching ESL); and the Boston region (I attended Tufts University from 2010 to 2014 and graduated as a History Major and Film Studies Minor).

My first major teaching experience was when I participated in Tufts' Peer Teaching Program during my junior year of college. Along with my college Sara Makaretz, I co-designed and taught a seminar course entitled "Parent-Child Relationships in Film" to a dozen freshman students.

Since then, I've continued to teach subjects such as French, digital arts and civics. I also spent the entire 2014-2015 school year abroad in France, teaching ESL to students in a high school in the Paris suburbs.

All of these teaching roles have granted me new and exciting benefits. I enjoy contributing to my students' academic success and to sharing our culture and experiences while working with one another. I am excited to continue this process in the coming future through tutoring.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Basketball

I have been playing basketball for 15 years. This includes four years of high school at the JV and Varsity level, and two years of serving as a Team Captain for a Tufts Intramural team in college. I am capable of running drills and teaching fundamentals of the game to young players, and also to generate their enthusiasm for this great sport.

French

I am bilingual in English and French. I learned French as a second language for over 13 years, from Kindergarten onward, and have lived in Francophone Europe (Belgium and France) for a combined eight years. I taught introductory-level French at Washington International School's "Passport to Summer" camp during the summer of 2015. I am happy to help anyone interested in gaining a grasp on this great language.
