About Caroline

After graduating my tiny liberal arts college without any idea of what I wanted to do professionally, but with a deep desire to make an authentic difference in the lives of others, I decided to work for an AmeriCorps program called City Year. With a career so far dedicated to nannying I loved the idea of working with children, especially children affected by the achievement gap in education. As an AmeriCorps member I worked as a reading interventionist, tutoring fifth grade students who were behind grade level in reading. I also taught a class of 25 fifth graders after school in enrichment lessons such as poetry, art, business etc. Through this experience I developed a LOVE for teaching and educating children. While researching credentialing programs I stumbled upon KIPP Charter School's teacher credentialing program (one of the top performing charter school systems in the country) in Washington D.C. After accepting the offer I relocated from my hometown of Palo Alto, C.A. to begin this new journey in DC charter schools as a first grade teacher.

I am just ending my first year as a first grade teacher, and am returning to the same school in the fall to again teach first grade. I have experience nannying all ages, and working with elementary age students both as a tutor and now as a teacher. I am credentialed (through DC) to teach early elementary-4th grade students. I am familiar with common core curriculum, and teach it in my classroom. This summer I would love to keep my own teacher skills sharp by tutoring, and working with elementary age students. I know many of my own students need summer support and I want to be a resource to any family looking for support. I absolutely love working with students every day and would love to help support in any way to help enhance your child's educational experience!

I have experience teaching common core mathematics. Common Core is much different than the math formerly taught in school and requires a lot of modeling and abstract thinking. I have experience intervening with a small group of students in my own class who sit with me each math block for individualized support. I also love to work with parents to help teach them how to support their students with this new way of learning math. We currently use both the Engage New York curriculum and My Math at my school. I also have experiencing teaching blended learning (computer based) in math.

As a communication studies major I am passionate about reading and literacy. I have experience instructing phonics block, independent reading and writing. I also have experience with reading interventions both as a reading tutor for fifth graders, and providing interventions in my own first grade class with some of our lowest students. We use the STEP literacy assessment as a tool for measuring growth, but I also use other literacy resources after addressing student needs. I also have experience using blended learning (computer based) in literacy.

We teach common core curriculum at my school, and I am familiar with DC common core standards for preK-4th grade.

I am DC early elementary and elementary certified.

If you have any questions/concerns please reach out-I would love to help you are your young learner!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I am currently a Capitol Teaching Resident with KIPP DC's student teaching program. As a part of our coursework we have studied and submitted assignments aligned to Common Core standards. All of the curriculum I teach in class is also Common Core aligned.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taken and passed the PLT: Early Childhood (5621), Early Childhood: Content Knowledge (5022), and the Core Academic Skills for Educators: Combined (5751) Praxis examinations. I also will be a certified DC early elementary teacher by the end of this month, (I will have completed my student teaching in June) and have already signed my contract to be a lead teacher for first grade with a charter school for the 2016-2017 school year.
