I'm a current elementary school teacher with over seven years of experience providing highly effective personalized instruction to students in grades 1 through 6. I am well-versed in Common Core standards and the Virginia Standards of Learning, which means that I can provide instruction aligned with your child's classroom. My tutoring approach is to provide each student with a personalized, fun, and multi-sensory learning experience to master new skills. Believe it or not, English makes a lot more sense than many of us were taught. Solid instruction in the English alphabetic code - a recognition of our 44 phonemes (units of sound) and all the ways those sounds can be spelled - will help your child improve both their reading and spelling at the same time. Orton-Gillingham is a phonetically-based system of instruction.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
