About Rachel

Hello!

I'm a current elementary school teacher with over seven years of experience providing highly effective personalized instruction to students in grades 1 through 6. I am well-versed in Common Core standards and the Virginia Standards of Learning, which means that I can provide instruction aligned with your child's classroom. My tutoring approach is to provide each student with a personalized, fun, and multi-sensory learning experience to master new skills. I have significant experience working with children with special needs as well as developmentally-typical students. I am a trained Montessori teacher and I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading instruction.

Reading, writing, spelling, and math are my areas of specialty. I'm also highly adept at providing tutoring in knowledge-based content areas like social studies and science as well as helping children to develop organizational and study skills.

As a Montessori teacher, I have access to the best approach in the world to help students develop number sense, develop mathematical fluency, and develop the critical thinking skills needed to tackle real-world math problems.

I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading; a systematic, sequential, and multi-sensory approach to reading, writing, and spelling. I teach skills sequenced in alignment with Common Core standards to help your child make rapid progress until they are reading on grade level.

I am a current teacher in a DC public charter school, which means that I am responsible providing Common Core-aligned instruction everyday!

I have over seven years of providing educational support to elementary students with diverse needs and from diverse backgrounds.

Believe it or not, English makes a lot more sense than many of us were taught. Solid instruction in the English alphabetic code - a recognition of our 44 phonemes (units of sound) and all the ways those sounds can be spelled - will help your child improve both their reading and spelling at the same time. Orton-Gillingham is a phonetically-based system of instruction.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
