About Howlader

I am an undergraduate student at American University majoring in Arabic Language Studies. I have spent the past three and a half years studying Modern Standard Arabic, but have also studied abroad in Jordan and Morocco, so I have a good grasp on the Darija and Levantine dialects as well. The extent of my tutoring/teaching has been with my friends and classmates, and I have been fairly successful with them. My native language is Bangla, and my second language is English, making Arabic my third language. I understand the learning curve between English speaking Arabic language learners, and will be able to help with overcoming that (mostly because I have done it myself!).

I love tutoring because it is really exciting and fulfilling to help someone else understand something that they are having difficulty with. I have always loved helping others and hope to help anyone interested as well. I learned using the al-Kitaab system but am adaptable to other books.

I listed most of my qualifications above, but I have been graded "Advanced-Mid" on the Oral Proficiency Interview by the American Council's Teaching of Foreign Languages. I also participated in the Department of State's Critical Language Scholarship program as an advanced level participant, have experience with translation of classical Arabic and media, and enjoy listening to Arab music as well.

Thank you for reading! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

I have studied Arabic for the past three and a half years at the American University in a formal classroom setting, in addition to studying abroad. I have completed immersion programs in Morocco twice- once in Fes three summers ago and once this past summer as an advanced language learning participant through the Department of State's Critical Language Scholarship program. I also spent a semester in Jordan, where I continued learning Modern Standard Arabic and started learning Levantine, and continued studying both at American University. I have received a grade of "Advanced-Mid" on the Oral Proficiency Interview administered through the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
