About Gary

I am a retired attorney who practiced law for about 20 years before becoming a teacher. I'm frequently asked why I would do such a thing, and my best (and pretty much only) answer to this is that - beyond getting tired of dealing with other lawyers and judges day after day - I wanted to more directly and positively impact people's lives. Teaching was something I had always wanted to do, so there I went. I spent about a year-and-a-half going back to school for an alternative teaching certification program and partially completed my second Master's degree (in addition to an MPA). I then taught high school English, history, government, law, and debate for the next 10 years in the Kansas City area.

The next questions, I suppose, are why I'm now in DC and why I'm not teaching in high school at this point. The answers are connected, in that my wife and I recently moved to DC at the invitation of our adult children, who have all lived here for the last 8-10 years. This was an offer we couldn't refuse, so we moved. I have looked into teaching high school here, but - and this entails a bit of personal philosophy - I strongly believe that, post-NCLB, schools have massively overemphasized standardized testing, and I'm no longer interested in participating in such a system. I have a more extended rant on this subject, but it probably belongs elsewhere. And so, here I am now.

I was a debater and theatre person in high school, continued debate in college, and later focused on trial and appellate advocacy in law school and my law practice. I have tried cases in a variety of settings, including federal jury trials and oral arguments at the state and federal levels. Maybe more importantly, I taught competitive speech and debate at the high school level for 10 years, which included sponsorship of debate and Mock Trial teams.

Aside from a keen personal interest in history, politics, and law - all of which tend to be interconnected - I have a BS in Political Science, a Master's degree in Public Administration (MPA), and a Juris Doctor (JD). Beyond that, I've taught all of these subjects over the last 10 years at the high school level, including AP Government and Politics.

If my background and personal narrative fit what you are looking for in a tutor, please contact me and we'll set up a first session to discuss your objectives and schedule lessons, or just get started. Thanks.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

Beyond my personal fascination with the subject matter of history, I hold degrees in Political Science (BS), Public Administration (MPA), and Law (JD). I have taught history classes at the high school level over the last 10 years - both US and World - and took graduate level history classes (e.g., Jacksonian democracy, foundations of American public education) as part of my alternative certification program for becoming a teacher. It's a fascinating subject and I'm always up for learning (and teaching) more.

Criminal Justice

I am a retired attorney with 20 years of practice in a variety of areas, including criminal law. Over the last 10 years, I have taught criminal law as part of my high school teaching curriculum. During my time as a teacher in this subject matter, I used several different methods, including direct instruction (lecture), group discussion, and Socratic Seminars (using textual material as a basis for an open-ended discussion).

Government & Politics

I hold degrees in Political Science (BS), Public Administration (MPA), and Law (JD). I have taught US government at the high school level over the last 10 years - including AP Government and Politics - and have guest lectured in community college classes on law and government. Lastly, I have actually worked on a couple of campaigns, one of which included door-to-door canvassing, and have also served as an election judge.

Public Speaking

I am a retired attorney with over 30 years of experience in professional public speaking. For 20 years as a lawyer, I regularly tried cases in state and federal courts, having been a debater in college and high school before law school. Beyond my personal experiences, over the last 10 years, I have taught oral communications classes and have sponsored competitive debate and Mock Trial teams at the high school level. In sum, I've listened to a lot of speeches over the years - some good, some bad - and I have substantial background in helping students to understand concepts (such as the human communication model) and practical techniques.

Social Studies

I hold degrees in Political Science (BS), Public Administration (MPA), and Law (JD). I have taught history, government, and public law at the high school level over the last 10 years - including AP Government and Politics - and have guest lectured in community college classes on law and government. Over the last five years, I have worked collaboratively in a high school social studies department - creating, e.g., common lesson plans - and also have a reasonably good fund of knowledge on subjects such as geography and sociology.
