About Li

After earning a BS and MS in biochemistry from UCLA and working at NIH for two years, I taught high school chemistry, biology, and physics for five years.

I love learning -- especially math and science related. As a result of my love of learning, I also love being able to teach others the things that I have learned. I have taught high school biology, chemistry and physical science and have tutored in SAT Math prep there as well. My favorite moments of teaching were marked by students saying "I get it" -- especially after a long struggle to understand but everything finally makes sense and the light bulb just turned on.

Growing up, math was one of my favorite topics in school. Even though I haven't officially taught math in a classroom (apart from the SAT Math prep), I have found that I can easily explain math concepts and assist in the computation/logic required.

One of the challenges of learning Chemistry is the abstract nature of the topic. It requires some imagination. Furthermore, students often find it hard to bridge the gap between the math they've learned in math class to be the tool used in science for calculations. I try to make abstract and difficult topics more tangible to students in ways that they can relate. I have found that this approach often facilitated to students' grasp of abstract concepts.

I have a fairly flexible schedule and I hope to help you remove the barriers to making learning a greater joy! Hope to hear from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I taught high school chemistry (including AP Chemistry) for 5 years at a private school.

Chinese

I was born in China and grew up in the US. My parents do not speak English, so I grew up speaking Chinese. I attended Chinese school for 8 years in the US and 2 years in China at a Chinese University. I completed Chinese level 6 in China. I am proficient in both oral and written Chinese and am able to help others master Chinese.

Genetics

I received my BS and MS in Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics from UCLA. I have enjoyed studying Genetics and have assisted others in learning it. I have also taught High School biology for 5 years, which included molecular biology and genetics.
