About Rob

My goal in tutoring is to help students connect to the subject material in a hands-on way. Having worked on numerous political campaigns over the last 15 years, I bring to my American History, Government, and Social Studies instruction a wealth of practical examples. I have worked on races at the local, state, and national levels of government in various capacities and in a number of states. For me, American History, Government, and Social Studies are not just ideas in a book, but are very much alive and intertwined with our daily lives. My goal is to help bring these subjects to life for students as well by showing how the ideas and theories learned in class play out in the real world. When people understand how their lives are impacted by decisions made in government then they are more likely to feel a sense of connection to the subject material.

In the course of my professional work I have had to craft a number of public statements and press releases, policy statements, and voter outreach materials. Through this professional writing experience I learned some of the tricks to writing clearly and persuasively - tricks that I look forward to sharing with my students. In politics or any other professional field, it is important to be able to write effectively so that your ideas can be communicated to others with as little confusion as possible. I help my writing and SAT Reading Prep students learn how to translate an idea into a powerful piece of writing.

In addition to tutoring in American History, writing, and SAT Reading Prep, I also tutor in Algebra and SAT Math Prep. While mathematical competency is important for doing well on standardized tests, it is also an important facet of professional work. Whether you eventually want to work in the Public, Private, or Non-Profit sector, at some point in your career you will have to know how to perform and interpret basic quantitative analyses. Today's successful professional must have a wide range of skills, including mathematical competency. To help students gain this competency, I deconstruct the complicated skills and processes into smaller, more manageable pieces that students then put together. Additionally, my studies in high-level statistics and econometrics at Brown University's Master of Public Affairs program has taught me how to talk about mathematical concepts in plain English - something that I think any student can appreciate.

I look forward to helping students gain a mastery of American History, writing, and SAT skills by using practical examples which help students form a real and personal connection to the material. Feel free to reach out with any questions or to schedule your tutoring appointment today.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
