Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have over 5 years of tutoring students with ACT test prep throughout various tutoring companies, and I have had a 100% success rate with all students. I usually have the student begin with a practice ACT English test, in order to gain a baseline and discover what his/her specific areas of weaknesses are. I focus on the following topics in order to improve their scores: punctuation, grammar and usage, sentence structure, vocabulary, and reading strategies.

ACT Math

As an experienced test prep tutor, I have quite the experience in the ACT Math portion. I usually have the student take a baseline practice exam in order to calculate a percentage, and I strive to always increase that student's percentage vastly by the end of our tutoring sessions. Specifically, I have experience focusing a great deal on pre-algebra, algebra, trigonometry, and geometry- all of which are covered on the exam.

ACT Reading

I have over 5 years of tutoring students with ACT test prep throughout various tutoring companies, and I have had a 100% success rate with all students. I usually have the student begin with a practice ACT Reading test, in order to gain a baseline and discover what his/her specific areas of weaknesses are. I focus on the following topics in order to improve their scores: vocabulary, reading speed, and use of context clues. I also practice with different types of reading passages that are usually seen on the ACT, including passages about the social sciences, history, literary narratives, and prose fiction.

Algebra 1

I have had 3 years of experience tutoring students in Algebra 1. Because it can be a difficult subject for many students to grasp, I have had success stories in the past where I was able to customize specific lesson plans for each individual student to cover the various topics in the subject. My tutoring always begins with the basic foundations of algebraic expressions, and slowly works it's way up to more complex topics.

COOP/HSPT

I have had 2 years of experience tutoring various middle school students to prepare for the HSPT exam. The majority of my previous clients aimed to get an overall score of 90% or better across all subjects of the exam, and I have had a 100% success rate in helping these students reach their goal. I have experience specializing in specific areas of the HSPT exam- like quantitative/mathematics or language/reading, as well as overall test prep across the board.

Elementary Math

I have had 2 years of experience tutoring students in elementary math; these students have ranged from age 5-11 years old. My previous experience allowed me to perfect lesson plans for younger students where I focus on two main topics: math fluency and comprehension. I have had a wide range of success with students I have tutored in the past who were able to increase their test scores immensely.

English

I have been an English tutor for the past 3 years. I have tutored students age 4-21, and have worked with students with learning disabilities, as well. Different aspects of English that I focus on are: reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, diction, syntax, punctuation, and essay writing.

Grammar

Being an English, Writing, and Reading tutor for 5 years, I have focused a great deal on grammar. I focus a great deal on proofreading, and teach the following concepts to help improve grammar: vocabulary, sentence structure, diction, syntax, and punctuation. I get to know each and every students' specific weaknesses with the aforementioned topics, and base my lesson plans around those.

Psychology

I have been a Psychology tutor for a little over 2 years now. My tutoring history has specifically focused on clinical psychology, social psychology, and abnormal psychology. In addition to my tutoring experience, I also hold a B.S. in Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University.

SAT Math

I have had 4 years of experience tutoring students in SAT Math. I would always begin by giving the student a baseline practice exam in order to gauge where they stand at the time. Then, after creating various customized lesson plans to tend to that students' specific weaknesses, I had the student take practice exams every week to examine progress. My experience as a tutor has always shown that my students have improved their scores not only on the practice exams, but on the actual SAT, as well.

SAT Reading

I have had 2 years of experience tutoring students in SAT reading. In my previous experience, I would assist students in extending their vocabulary, improving their reading fluency, and identifying key words and context clues. My experience as a tutor has shown that my students have always improved their SAT reading score after our tutoring sessions.

Vocabulary

I have been a vocabulary tutor for 2 years. My previous experience as a vocabulary tutor has revolved around customizing specific lesson plans for different students depending on their learning styles. I group vocabulary words into synonyms and antonyms in order to allow students to recognize the relationships between words, and I also teach students root words in order to help them identify the meanings of words they do not recognize.

Writing

I have experience being a writing tutor for the past 5 years. I have focused on different types of writing, including the following: test prep writing (SAT/ACT), AP and IB English classes, persuasive essays, expository essays, and literary analyses. In order to figure out where each students' strengths/weaknesses reside, I will focus on the following writing aspects: grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, diction, syntax, punctuation, and essay writing.

Excellent!

Buttoned up. Prepared prior to first meeting. Ready to commence work immediately upon my son's arrival. Clear, succinct communication back to parents. Effective use of time. And most importantly, rave reviews from my son. Easy Five Stars. Will use for at least the semester and for SSAT prep.
