About Jared

"Jared succeeds at using effective techniques and strategies and is able to communicate them clearly when explaining concepts and ideas. It has been quite a turnaround. He is also a great cheerleader.” (Adam, parent of one of my tutees).

I specialize in improving essay writing, grammar, reading comprehension and proof-reading skills - to enable my students to become better communicators, writers, and achievers. I majored in Psychology at Amherst College and then earned a Master's in Education -- to teach English and History -- from the University of Pennsylvania. I taught various subjects in both private and public schools for over 5 years. My goal is to make your learning experience a positive and engaging one, while still delivering on content and skill mastery so you can achieve more and get better grades in school. A high-level of customer-service is my top priority!

My tutoring style is collaborative and I believe that being a good tutor means being empathetic BUT ALSO firm enough so that we make progress quickly. If you trust me, then you will learn more from me.

Please contact me so that you can see if it is a good match. Thank you!

Jared

P.S. You work hard for your money so I zone in on your child like nothing else exists when we meet!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I earned a Masters in Secondary Education from the University of Pennsylvania. During that process, taught 3rd-7th grade English and Language Arts, which covered spelling, grammar, reading comprehension, and creative writing.

Grammar

I would love to help your child and know that I can help. I received a graduate degree in English from the University of Pennsylvania. My schedule is pretty flexible right now. I could not tell how you wanted to schedule the days, but it would be good for me to be able to do 2 or maybe 3 hours in one sitting (we would take snack breaks, of course).

I am very experienced in grammar, writing, and reading and your child will improve and have fun at the same time!

Literature

I took many English Literature courses while at Amherst College and then I got certified to teach Literature when I received my Masters in Secondary Education at the University of Pennsylvania. I am very widely read in a number of different genres (fiction and non-fiction, for example) and I have taught a wide range of books when I taught in various private and public schools shortly after graduating with my Masters Degree. I have also tutored many different novels and fiction, including a segment on short stories.

Political Science

When I first entered Amherst College, I took “Introduction to Political Science” and then “Political Obligations,” both taught by a masterful professor who revealed to me the principle of the “categorical moral imperative” and the “logic of morals” - and we thereby discussed what was “right” and what was considered “wrong” throughout the semester. I then taught a survey high school history course that focused on important historical figures, such as Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau, many of whom reflected the main themes of political science in that day. In the classroom, I emphasized critical thinking by using primary sources; and promoted interaction and accountability through extensive exposure to group work, mock debates, simulations, re-enactments, reciprocal games and individual portfolio work. When I tutored students, I also remained flexible and tried many of these different methods until we found one that worked the best.

Social Studies

I earned my certification to teach social studies while at the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. Social Studies, which largely concerns itself with the study of social relationships and the functioning of society, usually involves a wide range of liberal arts classes - history, government, economics, civics, sociology, geography, and anthropology. After I had mastered this content, it was easy to confidently formulate a point of view that I could successfully support with evidence in most discussions and debates. When I taught and tutored social studies to students using the Socratic method, I stressed the importance of supporting your views with evidence from the texts. This is where my emphasis first lies when we approach social studies as a discipline.
