About Briana

Hey there!

I'm Bri. Avid reader. Language enthusiast. Ivy League graduate who wants to help your child read and write at a higher level this school year.

I received my B.A in Linguistics and Philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania in 2014.

As an undergraduate, I volunteered with the Penn Reading Initiative as a tutor, helping West Philadelphia students improve their reading and comprehension. I worked one-on-one with students age 7-11 on a regular schedule helping to improve their phonemic awareness, comprehension, as well as their CONFIDENCE. As part of this program, tutors were responsible for creating their own curriculum and tracking individual student progress. This independence helped me to develop creative strategies that incorporated my linguistic background into my lesson plans. Courses such as language acquisition, syntax, and phonetics have provided the general framework for my approach to working with young readers.

In addition to phonetics and reading comprehension tutoring, I'm also VERY EXPERIENCED in writing & editing academic papers. Aside from writing 3+ philosophy papers, per semester, for four years, I was also able to develop my writing skills during my two years as a peer reviewer with the university's Writing Center. During this time, freshman students would schedule appointments to meet with me and review their papers. I helped them resolve issues with not only spelling and grammar but also content, clarity, and argument structure.

In addition to the high scores I received on both the SAT ACT, my college coursework and undergraduate tutoring experiences make me an awesome tutoring candidate.

Students, and parents of students, of all ages are encouraged to contact me for Reading and Writing advancement. I would love to schedule a meeting to begin working together on setting and exceeding your academic goals

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have 2+ years experience tutoring elementary reading and comprehension to struggling readers. I graduated with a 3.3 in Linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania. I use language acquisition research to help enhance my tutoring style.

Phonics

As a linguistics major, I'm qualified to teach phonics to young learners because I've studied language from, the most technical aspect. I passed my phonetics course in Spring of 2013 with an A- and have taken other courses relevant to language learning. Additionally, I've worked as a Reading tutor helping children to develop and enhance their phonemic awareness.
