My name is Gabrielle A. H., and I have a Master's degree in Education from The Ohio State University. I taught first grade for three years in Columbus, Ohio and then moved to Washington, D.C. to direct non-profit programs specializing in literacy development for low-income children. I believe that learning to read is one of the most important skills a child can develop. If a child cannot read by third grade, he or she may always be behind.
My approach to teaching reading is based on a balanced reading program that includes reading aloud and phonics. It also includes concepts from Reading Recovery, a wonderful tutoring program. Leveled books are used to assess achievement. I tutor in a nurturing and positive way to enhance confidence in a reader.
I am an experienced educator dedicated to teaching children how to read and use proper grammar. I have trained 100s of volunteers on how to read aloud to children, introduce phonics, and maintain a nurturing and positive learning environment. I provided the supervision and tools to achieve success. I have witnessed children develop a love of reading and have donated many NEW books to children from low-income families because all children deserve new books of their own to cherish.
I have taught both handwriting and spelling at the elementary level. The handwriting I taught was different than what I learned as a child. I learned block letters. I taught letters that aimed at learning cursive more quickly. I taught spelling every day and we had weekly spelling tests in my classroom. I reviewed each spelling test with each child. The entire cadre of first grade teachers taught the same words each week. English can be a tricky language, so we always pointed out the challenges and idiosyncrasies.
have always taught phonics, but with a specialized approach. It is taught within the context of reading a book aloud and using similar sounding words to help a child learn. Phonics alone does not always make a reader. Reading for meaning combined with phonics is my philosophy. It works. I have seen it its success so many times and it makes children proud.

I have a Master's degree in education from Ohio State University with a GPA of 3.92. I taught in an elementary school for three years. Following teaching, I directed three literacy nonprofits, creating curriculum and training hundreds of volunteers how to tutor children.
I have a Master's degree in Education. I taught first grade for three years where handwriting was a regular part of instruction. When I moved on to the non-profit field working with low-income children, I trained hundreds of volunteers on literacy and handwriting instruction. In this age of computers, I still believe proper handwriting is important. My student wrote letters and we published books. They really enjoyed published books. It was a sense of accomplishment for them.
I have a Master's degree in education and was taught balanced reading - a combination of whole language and phonics. Having that philosophy does not mean the two tools are evenly split. The focus is on the educational needs of each individual child. One child might respond better to a more-phonics-based approach. In my classroom, we would immerse ourselves in a letter for a week and I would seek out books to read aloud that focused on that letter. One example of a phonics-based approach is we would make a list of every word the children could think of that started with a particular letter. We would add to the list each day through conversation and coming across words in books to add to our list.
