About Matthew

I have extensive experience in teaching photography, photographic equipment, and photography related materials, such as Lightroom and Photoshop to all levels of students. While working at Ritz Camera and Image I was a Photo Patrol Instructor which meant that I taught all level of photography related material to all levels of students. I also maintained many of these relationships with students after I left Ritz Camera and Image and still continue to teach them today.

As a Graduate Student I was a T.A. and taught a class on video editing and development. I created the whole curriculum and held bi-weekly seminars on the subject matter, giving assignments and grading students.

I have been working with Lightroom since version 2.0 and have kept abreast of all the changes that have taken place in the program since then. I use Lightroom on a regular basis, developing photographs for clients and for my own photographs.

I have a strong art background with a degree from two of the top universities in my field. I understand and can put into practice the principles of art, and know how to portray that to others in a clear and concise manner.

I am enthusiastic about art and how it can enrich our daily lives. I love to share my passion, and am happy seeing others enjoy the experience of making their own art.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I have a B.F.A. in Printmaking and Drawing from Washington University in St. Louis. I studied all sorts of drawing techniques while at the University, both in core, and in my major, including figure and still life drawing, and non-representational drawing as well. I continued these studies at Cranbrook Academy of Art in my M.F.A. studies, moving into forms of digital drawings as well. I have continued these pursuits on my own as a practicing artist since I graduated from my Master's program.

Photography

I have a B.F.A. in photography from Washington University in St. Louis where I learned all forms of photography from model and product shooting to landscape and studio photography. Easy going and patient.

Matthew has a lovely temperament. He was very patient with me and understood that I learn by making notes as I tackle a new process/skill.
