About Jill

I am a professor at George Washington University. I teach writing to everyone from freshmen to doctoral candidates. I teach public speaking and public presentation skills to a variety of clients and I also teach law to undergraduates and law students.

As a teacher of law, I help students develop their analytic and communication skills. Law students--particularly first-year students--are often overwhelmed by the amount of reading and the need to think and write like a lawyer. So I also help new law students learn these skills.

As a teacher of writing, my emphasis is on helping students develop the ability to structure and organize their writing and to express their ideas clearly and skillfully.

As a teacher of public speaking, my primary goal is to help students gain confidence. I have been on stage in one form or another--as an actress, a lawyer, and a professor--for most of my life. So the training I received and the training I give to others emphasizes ways to deliver a polished presentation and methods for avoiding stage fright.

What I find most rewarding is helping my clients learn to articulate their ideas, whether written or spoken, in ways that are as effective and compelling as possible.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

My own education in learning to be a public speaker includes being a child actress from the age of 6 to the age of 13, performing in plays in college, successfully competing in public speaking competitions in law school, and being a practicing lawyer for many years. I have taught public speaking as a component of my courses at George Washington University for the past 33 years and am frequently asked to lecture on ways to be an effective public speaker.

Experienced and valuable tutor — I am very pleased with the efforts Jill put in proofreading my paper. She reviewed my Literature Review draft for cohesion, flow, and grammar. She also helped me better organize the ideas. Jill’s tutoring is much appreciated as it not only enhances my draft but also improves my own writing ability. ...
