Hello! I have five years of teaching and tutoring experience in classrooms from New York to Arizona to the Middle East. I recently finished teaching an intensive-Arabic program with high school students at the University of Chicago. My prior experience includes teaching English in the Peace Corps in Jordan, teaching with an adult literacy program in Washington, DC, and teaching in social studies and Arabic classrooms in the Chicago public schools. I have extensive experience one-on-one tutoring high school and college students in the following subjects: Western Civilization, Government & Politics, Literature, English, and SAT test prep. I enjoy working with students in all social studies/social sciences/humanities disciplines, including ESL, and am especially interested in working with students on writing and research projects and language study.

I have a master's degree in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Chicago; my research and writing focused on the history of ideas, history and religion, and the history of the Middle East as world history. I also have extensive coursework in Arabic, in addition to the immersion learning experience that Peace Corps-Jordan provided me with. I have worked with beginner and intermediate-level Arabic students as a tutor and a classroom teacher.

My specific interests are history and language, but I enjoy teaching and tutoring many subjects. Whether working with students on history, writing, or English materials, the critical thinking, research, and argumentation skills that my students acquire through our sessions benefit them in all of their courses.

I look forward to meeting and working with you.

Best,
Kyle B

Arabic

I have been studying Arabic since 2007 and have spent 2.5 years in intensive, immersion-language situations in Jordan and Morocco. I studied Media Arabic and read major works of Arabic literature at the University of Chicago, where I obtained a master's degree in Middle Eastern Studies. I worked with a Middle School Arabic Class in Chicago where I focused on beginner-level language acquisition. In addition to tutoring Arabic, I have extensive experience teaching English to non-native speakers, so I am well-acquainted with second-language teaching and acquisition.
