About David

Teaching any student requires sensitivity to his/her developmental learning level. Students generally want to acquire experience and competence as human beings. Whether teaching ACT/SAT Prep, English, History or Spanish, the tutor must impart a sense of belief in the student's ability to learn and grow academically and as a person. Having taught students with specific learning disabilities for a number of years, I have learned that one's level of self-esteem is even more important than one's level of academic readiness. I have found that when students believe they can learn and are taught using a program such as the Wilson Reading System, they can rapidly acquire and maintain reading skills pretty quickly.

Every learner possesses a unique combination of learning preferences or styles that the tutor must be cognizant of. As a teacher, I believe that people learn best using a variety of media and experiences to make the subject come alive. The subject matter must be intellectually accessible, interesting and relevant to one's life. While students must master content, it is clear that different students learn in different ways and at different rates. Some learn better while listening while others who are visual learners get more out of reading and visually processing relevant information. Other students are more kinesthetic in their style; they enjoy constructing or creating products that motivate them to understand the material more effectively. I think that a good teacher utilizes a variety of activities and experiences to help the learners best understand and process what they are learning. In terms of credentials, I hold a Certificate of Advanced Study in Special Education and I have been trained in the Wilson Reading System which is effective for teaching older students with specific Learning Disabilities to improve their reading levels and skills.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have recently passed WyzAnt's subject content tests for ACT Reading and ACT English/Writing. I also possess recent experience working with high school students who are preparing to take the ACT or SAT. I feel confident that a given student's ACT score can improve, sometimes significantly, with adequate instruction.

ACT Reading

I have helped a number of students improve their writing and reading score performance on the ACT. As opposed to the SAT, the ACT is more high school curriculum-based. Some students do much better on the ACT than they do on the SAT because of its focus. The fact that the ACT does not deduct points for guessing is also advantageous for some students.

American History

I have successfully tutored students taking the AP American History Test. The student scored a 5 of 5 on the test. My first degree, the B.A., was in Secondary Education/History.

Common Core

As a special educator, I have taught students with initially weak skill levels in common core skills in both reading and math. Fundamentally, I believe that all students can learn and achieve literacy competence. Most of my students have made significant improvement in their common core skills in multiple subjects. My tutoring repertoire has included divergent techniques that have been adapted to the unique learning style of each student. I have found that skilled learners are successful not only in the basic common core skills, but in all subjects across the curriculum. A good and skillful tutor can make an enormous difference for the better in the academic and personal efficacy of his/her students. I have enabled many students, despite their previous histories, to succeed in mastering common core skills while simultaneously achieving greater self-esteem in the process.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a certified special educator, I have worked with students who are generally still below Grade 6 level in basic skills.
In terms of credentials, I hold a Certificate of Advanced Study in Special Education and I have been trained in the Wilson Reading System which is effective for teaching any student with delays in basic skills. The skills needed for a good elementary educator are even more evident in the preparation of a special educator. I have also learned that one's level of self-esteem is even more important than one's level of academic readiness. As a teacher, I believe that people learn best using a variety of media and experiences to make the subject come alive for the learner. This is especially true for Elementary age students.

English

I have been a certified and experienced bilingual and ELL teacher of English for over 10 years. My students have acquired conversational and academic English skills leading to proficiency in less than 3 years. I have also passed all the English and reading tests for WyzAnt tutors.

European History

My courses in History included the History of Europe. Essentially, up through the Protestant Reformation in the 15th Century, European History was virtually synonymous with that of the Roman Catholic Church and its influence on kingdoms and empires - from the age of Constantine through the invention of the printing press.

Government & Politics

I have a B.A. in Comprehensive Social Studies which include a background in Government and Politics. Furthermore, I have taught Advanced Placement courses in American Government, and I have helped numerous college students in successfully editing papers in this field of study.

Grammar

I have taught grammar as part of my SAT writing preparation program to a number of students. The students have responded well to the 10 grammar packets on various aspects of grammar instruction.

Phonics

As a special educator, I have received specialized instruction in strategies effective for teaching phonics to early and intermediate learners. I hold a Certificate of Advanced Study in Special Education and I have been trained in the Wilson Reading System which is effective for teaching students with specific Learning Disabilities to improve their reading levels and skills. Thus, the Wilson Reading System is phonics-based for students who have not yet mastered the basic skills of reading. I have utilized this system effectively with students ranging from the early elementary grades through high school.

Political Science

My Pennsylvania Permanent Certification in Comprehensive Social Studies covers the area of Political Science as well. When I taught Social Studies in Philadelphia, PA, I taught courses in civics and American Government. These fall under the discipline of Political Science in all states.

Reading

I have passed the WyzAnt subject tests in both Reading and Elementary subjects and I have been a successful reading tutor for a number of years. I am committed to the belief that, given the right instruction, every child can learn and improve academic skills and performance.

SAT Reading

I have passed the WyzAnt SAT Reading Test for tutoring; I have about 15 years of experience tutoring SAT Reading and SAT Writing. The great majority of my students have made significant gains in their SAT scores after receiving my tutoring.

SAT Writing

As an SAT Prep instructor and tutor, I have effectively instructed students in both SAT Reading and SAT Writing areas and appropriate test-taking skills. Most of my students demonstrated significant improvement in scores on SAT practice tests in both areas.

Social Studies

I possess Permanent (99 years) Certification in Pennsylvania in Comprehensive Social Studies (7-12). I taught History and Political Science in high school for 6 years before moving to the Washington, DC area. I very much enjoy teaching social studies to students of middle school and high school levels.

Spanish

I have helped numerous students successfully pass Spanish 3. I have also served as a Spanish/English interpreter at school functions and in court proceedings. Students in elementary grades through college have improved Spanish language skills.

Spelling

As spelling is part of the English curriculum, students whose writing, English and Reading skills improve also strengthen their spelling skills as well. There are effective methods for teaching all these skills that help students advance academically.

SSAT

I have successfully prepared a number of students to do well on the SSAT. Vocabulary synonyms and analogies were usually the areas of greatest need initially. I have found that almost all students can improve to score above the 70th percentile in a relatively short time. My word list for the SSAT has proven effective for students.

Study Skills

Study Skills include "how to" skills including researching (both in a library and on the internet) organizing time, SQ3R Reading techniques, using references such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, map atlases, anthologies, etc., identifying one's own learning style. Most elementary and special education teachers have had to conduct lessons using some or all study skills. I have experience teaching these skills- both separately and incidentally as part of the instruction in other disciplines like Language Arts and Social Studies.

Vocabulary

Students have benefited from my tutoring for test prep in math, reading and writing areas. In most cases, students have demonstrated noteworthy improvement in score performance after tutoring. In addition, I have helped students edit and successfully prepare essays for college admissions and scholarship applications.

World History

My undergraduate degree (B.A.) was in history and I have always enjoyed the study of World History. I have also taught and tutored a number of students to successfully prepare for the AP World History Test.

Writing

Having passed WyzAnt's proficiency tests in a number of subjects, I am approved to teach or tutor English, Grammar, and writing. I have taught academic writing to high school and college students successfully for a number of years.
