About Jacob

I earned my PhD in English Literature from Cornell University, and have taught undergraduates at both Cornell University and Georgetown University here in Washington, D.C., as well as high school students through Georgetown University's summer program. I am experienced in teaching students at the high school and college level the skills necessary for clear, concise writing through the paradigm of thinking analytically about English literature.

Writing is a skill that can be taught, as I've seen countless times in the classroom. Over the course of a semester, a student can shift from lacking direction and feeling disengaged to a state of focus, clarity and confidence. There is no feeling quite like witnesses a student build their self-assurance as they master the writing skills that equip them for a lifetime of success. In the end, the student learns that the potential to conquer the challenges of writing well was inside them all along. It's my job to bring out that knowledge.

My academic focus is divided between contemporary literature and philosophy, though I have also published scholarly articles on film and graphic novels. Often, I've found students' existing interest in popular culture opens up a world of possibilities for the appreciation of classic literature, as well as a deeper understanding of political and social issues. Additionally, my work with students applying to American universities has enhanced my ability to assist students writing personal admissions essays and students who speak and write English as a second language.

I've taught classes at Georgetown University that include “The Contemporary Novel” and “Post-WWII American Literature,” as well as courses in literary and cultural theory. Perhaps my most popular class was “Comics and the Graphic Novel,” from which I saw students return to study with me in many of my other classes.

I'm currently writing a book on denim which explores the intersection of the things we wear and the ways we dream through the lens of 20th-century American history. Additionally, I have written a series of personal essays on the subject of cancer and healing.

My flexible schedule allows me to work with your availability for both long and short-term periods. I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I've taught courses on essay composition for high school students, helping them craft applications that have earned them admission into top universities. I've also worked with students on a one-to-one basis, focusing on both the common application and supplemental essays required by various schools. My counseling methods are informed by my own doctoral studies and my teaching at both Cornell University and Georgetown University. I excel at helping students craft application narratives that are simultaneously personal and effective, allowing them to stand out of the crowd.

Literature

I hold a PhD in English literature from Cornell University. While my doctoral work focused on contemporary US fiction, I have studied the broader history of literature and literary culture. Further, I am an experienced teacher of poetry, drama, and other related topics.

Writing

I have taught courses on composition at both Cornell University and Georgetown University. I have over eight years of experience helping students to better convey their ideas, make persuasive arguments, and write with clarity and grace. My experience has prepared me to teach students at all levels of experience, from high school to college and beyond.
