About Susan

I am a graduate of the Rutgers School of Criminal Justice - one of the top schools in the country - and studied under many professors who wrote the seminal texts in their field. Upon completing my M.A. I was awarded the Richard J. Hughes Award for the the graduate with the highest GPA (4.0). I specialized in Research Methodology and Statistics and engaged in research with my professors in the areas of: white collar crime, corrections, and juvenile justice. Immediately upon graduation I went to Southern Illinois University (SIU) to act as a Lecturer, a position I held for five years. I then moved to Washington, DC to work as a Senior Research Associate with the National Council on Crime and Delinquency. In this position I was able to help secure more than $3 million in grant dollars, and was involved in research and writing for agencies at the local, state, and national levels.

I have recently decided to write full-time on a variety of subjects but teaching is also my passion. My teaching experience is from a state university with an open enrollment system and so I learned to help students whose academic skills ran the spectrum. I have also been heavily involved in fundraising for nonprofit organizations and so have spent many years writing training manuals, getting people motivated, and speaking in front of groups both small and large. I love learning, and few things give me the same joy I get from watching the look of comprehension of subject matter dawn on the face of another. Even the most apprehensive or least confident of students cannot contain that look.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

The history of the United States was a big part of my undergraduate and graduate studies in criminal justice. I find our history fascinating and I have read hundreds of journals articles and books on the subject. One of the great things about living in this area is that you can relate any topic to a building, collection, etc. that is in DC. Guiding students by relating topics to where they live helps them feel more connected to their studies, which in turn increases their chances of success.

Criminal Justice

I graduated with a B.S in Criminal Justice from SUNY Brockport and with an M.A. from the Rutgers School of Criminal Justice. Upon completing my M.A. at Rutgers - one of the top criminal justice schools in the U.S. - I received the Richard J. Hughes award for highest GPA (4.0). I also spent five years teaching criminal justice at Southern Illinois University.

Sociology

I have a Master's in Criminal Justice from Rutgers, and many of the courses needed to complete my degrees were in Sociology. I received the Richard J. Hughes award for the highest GPA in my graduating class. I was a lecturer at Southern Illinois University for five years and then spent five years with the National Council on Crime and Delinquency doing research and publishing articles, final reports, etc.

Study Skills

Having graduated with both a B.S and an M.A., I spent a significant amount of time honing my own study skills. I used those skills to help my students better prepare and perform during my time as a university lecturer and faculty advisor to the student club. I use an approach whereby I identify with the student things that are of great interest (e.g., sports, music, nature) and use examples from those in order to grab their interest so they WANT to study more often and more effectively
